hey everyone, FINALLY got my hands on an audiophile2496(junked the crappy soundblaster128) at any rate heres what im running
P4 1.5Ghz
win 2000 pro
1gig ram
80 gig HD
sonar 2.2

i did a wave profile and got this...

buffer size 107.4 msec

Effective latency at 44khz stereo 322.2 msec

does this seem right? should I be doing better?

also, if anyone has this soundcard(and loves it) can u help me a lil on setting it up. Im running the midi ins and outs to my keyboard controller, and to my roland jv1010 outboard gear..... the main stereo outs im running to my mixer for sound..... do I use the main stereo ins for recording vocals...guitars...etc... and what do u do with the coaxial s/pdif in and out??
any help is GREATLY appreciated
thanx

Sounds like you are still using MME drivers.

Options - Audio - Advanced - Driver Mode (uncheck Always use MME) and set it up to use either WDM or ASIO drivers.

I defer to older and wiser heads concerning your mixer setup.

:) Q.

Doh

dont know why i didnt think of that

well its a lil better but no tmuch, now i got
100.0 msec buffer size
and
effective latency at 44khz/stereo 100.0 msec

Have you moved the latency slider to the left in OPTIONS - AUDIO ?

Have you got the latest driver for the Audiophile installed -- (from website not install CD)?

Q.

Also... If you go into the M Audio Delta Control Panel and hit the Hardware Settings tab, you should see an option for DMA Buffer Sizes. You can lower Wave down to 8milliseconds. It's probably set a t 20.

drivers

what a pain, thanks for all yer help! i downloaded a newer driver, but my win2k doesnt seem to want to update it(it wants to keep the original drivers) do i have to uninstall?? sorry for being a pain

Yes, before installing new M-Audio drivers you have to use the uninstaller, then windows will see your soundcard as new again and start the driver installation from scratch.

argh!

ok, i got the new drivers on now.... still after wave profiling i get...
92.9 msec at 44khz using wdm drivers....

i know in the m-audio icon for the audiophile2496 card u can adjust latency on that, but what does anyone have it set on who uses this card?

very frustrated

ps thanx for everyones input, you guys are helping alot

cant stand windows

Ok, i was wrong
for some lame reason
win2k is not letting me update the drivers. SO annoyed right now.

I try uninstalling them and when my system boots back up and recognizez the new soundcard and i try to point it to the new drivers i downloaded, its still reverting back to the inital ones from the cd that came with the soundcard that im guessing are still on the hardrive somewhere, which ive also gone in and delted. what am i doing wrong. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any chance you have another soundcard on your Motherboard that is being used instead of the 24/96? If so, turn it off.

nope

no other sound cards, and i DID use m-audios driver uninstaller, somerthing i just found out i had to do, but still not getting the new drivers

the web site says that the new driver is 5.10.00.29
and my system says its using 5.10.0.5029

sooo confused

I don't use the Audiphile. However my buffers are set to 128 samples. Gives me a stable 2.9 ms latency.

hmm

increase buffers? i did manualy slide the latency all the way to the left and i think its running fine, is that ok? or do i have to use wave profiler to set it best for me?

Yes, but you can also set the latency buffers in your Delta Control Panel (for you Audiophile). These buffers can be set to, say, 128 samples. Then Reprofile your card in Sonar (Options -> Audio), and set your latency to 2.9 ms... That should work (if you have a fast computer).

reread my above post... the option for buffers is in the same menu right below Wave...

I think you are using the latest driver - the number is just being reported differently. Anything ending .29 is currently the latest.
If the Audiophile is the only card and you don't use any other audio programs - set the delta buffer to minimum (64). Open Sonar and go to the profiler. Set the slider full left and run it. Then pull the slider up until you have stable playback and record - this should go in 1.5ms steps on 44.1Khz.
Some other programs that use ASIO or WDM/KS as Sonar does, won't like the Delta buffer at 64 so I suggest you set it at 256 before profiling. This should suit everything and the latency slider in Sonar can probably be left on minimum. You might get away with a lower setting than 256 but I find it a very safe value and plenty low enough for playing soft synths. You will probably want to try for lower though if you want to hear plug-in FX using input monitoring.
I think some one else mentioned you must not have "Always use MME interface..." checked on the advanced tab?

thanx

ok, did all that, got to about 11msec now, pretty good

what should i have buffers in playback queue set to? right now its at 2
