Blick-um, blick-um...
Question for the pros:

Here's my typical recording path:
Microphone into
True Systems Precision 8 into
RME Fireface 800

I want to start using a FMR RNC in the chain to tame the peaks of a new vocalist who is not really trained in proper mic techniques.

So the BIG question is:

Where in the signal chain do I put the compressor?

Keep in mind the RNC is unbalanced.

Please help. Tnx, Rez

I don't have your exact same system, but if you want to track with some compression, do it as Carter stated. I do mine like this....mic-pre-RNC-Delta44. I am not a good vocalist, and use some compression on the way in, for those reasons.

This is how I would set it up, but someone else will come along and offer different ideas. ;)

That's about right :)

Normally you would see something like Mic -> pad -> polarity -> preamp ->

and then after that you can sort of mix and match.

In this case, the signal flow isn't complicated, so it would come right after your preamp stage.

Yep, the true has nowhere for a side chain so that is your only option
(I am not familiar with the fireface, can you insert there?)

Thanks!

Thanks guys for helping me confirm my initial thoughts.

Using the Fireface was another possibility. Here was my other option:

Mic to Mic Pre out to Fireface In (Channel 1)

Within RME's Total Mix matrix:
Route Channel 1 to Channel 7 Out
Channel 7 out patched to RNC In

RNC Out patched back to Fireface Channel 7 In

Record Channel 1 AND Channel 7 so I have both a compressed and uncompressed (pure) signal. Overkill? Probably... but better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. ;-)

Yeah that will work too! two different flavors on one vocal. :D but there is alot of ad/da going on.

A/D to D/A to A/D ... and that's why I was askin' the pros!

I'll try to do a test tonight just to see if there are noticeable artifacts.

Thanks again! -Rez
