Help yourself. Read all the information already available at the top of this forum in the stickies....

You need three things.
1. Recording Software - Audacity is free
2. Interface -many on the market will work fine.
3. Microphone with connecting cable.

I say to go in your physical self to a store and talk to humans. Much more faster learning than internet.

You will need an interface between the computer and the mic. For a laptop that usually implies either a firewire or USB connection. As firewire is less common on laptops recently, USB is your likely solution.

A good all-round mic is the Shure SM57, an inexpensive mic that in common in most studios, and used for everything from vocals to guitar cabs to snares.

Vocals will pick up the sound of the room in which they are recorded in addition to the sound of the voice, so look for spaces in which to record that are not small rectangular boxes with low ceilings.

And of course you will need to have recording software installed on the laptop. I suggest that a sample rate setting of 44.1K at 24 bits will give you a good starting place. There is usually a driver application for the interface to set the sample rate. Just make sure that setting matches the setting in the recording software.

mjphoto's, RAMI, moresound, ecc8, I think we need to have a guidelines for these questions posted maybe one of you can set a stickie for "If your wanting to start recording and you ask what do you need (the people your seeking advice from) need info from you first. Help us Help you. (I dont know how to make those stickies up there lol)

1.) What are you recording?
2.) The set of your recording 1 instrument or whole orchestra? (this allows us to set your I/O or in's and outs for you interface, so we dont recommend a ProFire 2626 when your only just recording a single acoustic guitar)
3.) Are you looking into just a recording setup or a full on production setup with mixing and mastering in mind?
4.) is your recording needs for learning & education, a demo tape, commercial recordings, personal recordings, or just a hobby or are you interested in a long term career as an engineer, or do you just want a entry level setup in hopes of becoming a long term engineer?
6.) What is your budget?

WIth out these things we cannot accurately give you advice on your new setup to purchase. All that good info that was just posted buy those great guys above is going to be for not and t hew will be editing and reposting all new euip based on the new info you give.

So Srini I ask the following....
1.) What are you recording?
2.) The set of your recording 1 instrument or whole orchestra? (this allows us to set your I/O or in's and outs for you interface, so we dont recommend a ProFire 2626 when your only just recording a single acoustic guitar)

6.) What is your budget? $2000 just for a mic or is that what your willing to spend for an entire setup?
