Hi,

First post here. I'm looking for a simple setup to do some vocal recording. This is used just for recording vocals, no instrument involved. My wife wants to record some singing (Karaoke style) and then do some post processing with the recorded audio. Currently she just use a very cheap mic plug into the sound card of PC to do it. I guess she had a headphone to play back the Karaoke music and then sing into the mic to record. I do have a shure SM58 or 57 mic but she can't use it as we need a preamp.

Wonder will the M Audio Fast track Pro will do the trick or a bit over kill ? Any other cheaper alternatives ? I'm not looking for a high end solution just hope to have a much better sound quality than current setup.

Thanks for your help.

All you need is a basic interface. The FT Pro might be overkill but, it will provide expandability into the future. Consider used. Is there a Craigslist in you're area? There's always e-bay as well.

Ditto here on used however a new Fast track will come with software. Used ones may or may not if the owner lost it. In any event make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements.

What is the point of the exercise? What are you / she planning on doing with the audio, once recorded?

+1 to used gear. You can save hundreds and get more in the long run.

If I remember correctly I only spent 90$ on my FT Pro used, although it didn't come with the DAW or drivers. A good buy none the less and its a quality machine that will give you more flexibility for future needs.

Thanks for all suggestions. Found an used Alesis Multimix 4 USB for $60 and I think it should fit the bill. Will start with that and see how it goes ...

After the audio is recorded, it might be mixed with other audio tracks and maybe video as well.

Just in case you were wondering... I started using a condenser mic for vocals and it blew away any other mic I've ever used. I've been borrowing a Audio Technica AT 2035 from a friend and it's made all the difference in the world from the SM-57 I was previously working with. I saw the AT 2035 for $150 new online, but again if you can find a good used one, go for it!

Just a thought :)

And where would the other audio tracks be coming from?

Are these things you'd record yourself, or will you be applying vocals over "pre-mixed" tracks supplied by others. ie,.will you have access to individual tracks, or just a stereo mix which has been mastered already.
