there are no good studios near my town, so we are going to attempt to record our band in my house. my brother got a copy of pro tools (i dont know how, i didnt ask) and we have a mixer , microphones, cables, all the instrumental stuff. when we have everything plugged into the mixer, how do we connect that to the computer. Also, say we have 12 inputs on the mixer, is there a way to connect so it is 12 different tracks in pro tools, or does it flatten everything from the mixer down to one track?

You can record two tracks with your current soundcard (L&R stereo). To record more tracks simultaneously you would need a soundcard with more inputs. m-Audio, aardvark, hoontek, MOTU etc etc, there are lots of manufacturers of recording soundcards. If you want 8 inputs it'll cost at least $400. 12 inputs would be considerably more.

You would also need corresponding channel inserts/direct outputs on your mixer.

what kind of mixer is it? If each channel has an insert then you can have 12 different channels of audio to your soundcard.
