Hi, I have a few drum racks housed inside an instrument rack for the purpose of making drum kits and the sample selections mapped to the drum rack macros. When I save the instrument rack, the macro positions of the housed drum racks are not saved so my sample selections are lost. Should the drum rack macro positions be stored when I save the instrument rack? This is going to be a real pain if I have to save from within the drum racks.

I think the key is to set a default minimum value and that should get you where you want. Try that out. You can alos find some good tips on Youtube on working with Macros in Ableton.

I don't think you understood my question. The problem is that the macro positions of the drum racks are not saved when I save the instrument rack. The drum rack is housed inside the instrument rack. I've actually realized just now that the drum rack macro positions are saved with the instrument rack but can not be recalled by hotswapping with the instrument rack. This means that I can't easily recall presets. Instead I have to load the instrument rack up again on a different channel from the saved version.

I thought I understood. Maybe if your drum rack has specific values, then you will have to save it and give it a name. Same for the macro. I have lots of effects and VIs that I use and if I want to save the value, I save that particular "instance" and give it a name, David Drum, David Compressor. Not sure if that might help or not.

Solved. The problem was this. I was using a device randomizer inside the rack which was mapped to the macros. This was preventing the macro positions from adjusting to their saved positions when loaded up again. The solution was to just take the randomizer out of the rack.

I have a different kind of challenge now though. I use a randomizer to flick through a rack of samplers that each have 128 hits loaded. When it lands on a combination I like, I save the rack as a preset. I find this a more interesting way of making custom kits than auditioning hits myself. What I would like to do sometimes is extract only the samples that are currently selected and save them into a folder or a new rack as a kit. The current way of working means every time i have my desired samples selected for my kit, I can only save the entire rack with all 1024 samples and it just remembers the sample select positions from the samplers. The individual samplers don't show the sample that is currently selected. For example: The drum rack has a sampler on pad C1. The sampler is loaded with 128 kick samples which are distributed equally over the 128 range and the sample select mapped to a macro. Now if it lands on a kick sample I like for my kit, the sampler doesn't display which sample is selected. All I can do is look and see that the macro is selected at say sample 76 and then go into the zone and scroll down the list 76 times until i find the sample and then find in explorer from there. It should be easier than that.
