Need help on simple voice recording from Tape.

Ok Guys.. I'm a newbie at this recording thingy, so bear with me please.

I have a simple cassette recorder that has some recorded voice stuff on it , and I just want to transfer it over to the computer and use some for windows event sounds....like windows logon, windows exit, mail...etc.

But it seems my recordings have either a humming or a buzzing in the background when I play it back. I can't tell if this is from the PC or the tape.
I have managed to move the Mic outside the computer room and into another bedroom then shut the two doors between them. (Small House)
Somehow the background noise is still there.
What can I do to get rid of the background noise or at least lower it so it's not so noticeable?

Why can't you just record straight to the computer's soundcard??

your "tape recorder", if it's the kind I'm thinking of, has notably shitty sound quality.

Your computer should record a much cleaner signal.

Beyond that, you could take the sound file into a WAV editor and cut the EQ out for the frequency range that contains the noise.

That, of course, requires you to record the tape onto the computer, which again begs the question: why not record straight to computer...

I have Sound Forge XP 4.0 , I know it's old but it's the best softwear I have.

As for the recording they are from a tap recorder that was connected to the phone. Just want to use some of them for windows event files as I said before ...nothing more.

As for as using Sound Forge , I know very little about it , It's from sound Blaster live card I had a while back and not sure if it's the true full version or not.

I have been able to cut out sections we didn't want but don't have a clue about how to get rid of the excess noise.
