im lookin to build a studio in the corner of my basement and i was going to make some sound pads out of 2x4s and insulation to line the walls with but i dont know what I should do to cover up the open areas that are not lined by walls and if anyone has any suggestions for low cost ways to make htis area as acoustically fit for a studio as possible. I have heard that packing blankets are good but i also heard that they dont block low frequency sounds. I really have no clue what I am doing with this whole thing though and I seriously need some advice before i start spending money. Post any suggestions you have.

you should really check out the Ethan Winer article on acoustics to get you on track.

Packing blankets *can* absorb(not block;nothing is perfect) low frequency sound, if you place them in an adequate and/or right position in the room. As we know, bass is usually built up in the corners of a room. So if you had to pack blankets and stack it in the corner of the room, you will notice some differences throughout the room. Bass will be much more apparent and clear. If you're doing drum and bass music, bass traps are damn important! Overall, bass traps are very useful regardless of what you do. The more, the better.

thanks for the help man where can i find this article?

and does anyone know where i can get cheap packing blankets. Ebay isnt really too cheap once you add the shipping fares in.

well i am like building the studio in the corner of a large room in my basement, so if i stacked pillows i would have a huge fort like a first grader. So the packing blankets are probobly my best option

Does looks matter? Is it a commercial studio? No, right? If you're getting good sound, that's what matters.

well dude like i am probobly gonna have like 30-40 feet of wall il have to make out of blankets or pillows, and that would take a freakin ass load of pillows and someone would just find great fun in knocking those down

I would definatly love knocking down a wall of pillows. :D

Hey PokerDude,

Don't go wasting your time and money on blankets and pillows, what you need to use is Fiberglass insulation, commonly known as OC 703. It is probably cheaper than buying pillows and blankets and is definitely going to be more effective.
Keep your pillows and blankets for the slumber parties.

Here is a link that will explain everything you need to know, read it over a few times and the information will slowly sink in. It is a great arcticle written by a guy called Ethan Winer, he really knows his stuff.
It will show you what you need to do to acoustically treat your room and where you need to treat your room to cut down reflections and to trap bass frequencies etc.
It is quite a lengthy arcticle but if you take the time to read it and digest the information you will have a lot better understanding and more insight into what you will need to do to help you achieve a well balanced mix in your home studio.

The link: www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

This will definitely help you out!
