there must be certain monitors which work BETTER for certain "genres" of music than others. i am sure there are monitors that are well suited for a 3-piece "guitar/bass/drums" punk band as well as monitors that are better suited for an EXTREMELY "bass-heavy" hip-hop group. maybe durability issues are involved,..maybe frequency response BASED on the style of music played through them.
i am looking for monitors that will translate orchestral (chamber orchestra-type) and ambient (sometimes QUITE minimalistic in nature) music......lots of quiet passages with acoustic and other delicate instrumentation,...sometimes dramatic changes in "inflection" (i.e. a sudden SOARING viola solo,...etc).....but mainly CLARITY and VERY WELL DEFINED STEREO SEPERATION!! are the Mackie HR's the way to go?? the KRok V8's?? EXCELLENT reproduction of "delicate"instruments is what i'm after. my budget would only allow for expenses in the $1200-$1500 for a pair (unless of course there is an excellent choice for less!). i figure these might be the ONLY pair of GOOD monitors i'll buy,..so i'll need some good advice. any direction/advice would be appreciated. thanks.:) :)

What you’re asking for is really the most difficult of all scenarios. You want a speaker that has wide frequency response, wide dynamic range, and high linearity. I just recommended a kit from Speaker City that fits this bill, and I’ll do the same for you.

The Scan-Speak MTM-18 with either a D2905/97000 or D2905/99000 “Revelator” tweeter is what you want. http://www.speakercity.com/sc_kits.shtml

This system will give you excellent frequency response, and more real bass extension than either of the monitors you mentioned. Plus the linearity and dynamic range will be absolutely untouchable for systems even 3 times the price. With the tweeter upgrade it will run you just about $1500. Of course these are passive, so you need to factor in an amp as well.

Let me just add something to Barefoot's recommendation. While I love MTM designs (I have the Aria 7's myself), they are not suited for nearfield monitoring. Because of their design, you must be several feet back from the for the drivers to blend correctly. So, if you're planning on using them for midfield or farfield, then I will second the recommendation!

Good point I forgot to mention. Thanks LT.:)

thanks for the advice on the MTM's. HOWEVER....(and i should have mentioned this before)....due to "space constraints" its NEARFIELD monitors that i'll need. sorry 'bout that. if you have any recommendation for nearfields that might suit my needs, please let me know. cheers.:(

In that case I’d suggest you consider the Scan Speak 7 kit. I has the same drivers and I think you can also upgrade the tweeters as I mentioned.

Another possibility I just remembered is the Truth Audio TA-1x monitor. I had never heard of them until CyanJaguar posted a thread, but the design looks very promising. I posted some comments here.https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=50718
