Hi folks

Having problems installing an Audiophile 2496 card in a WinXP Computer. I start up windows, it finds the new hardware, it installs the drivers from the CD and then says "data invalid". Obviously then the card wont work. It just says that it can't find the hardware. Also XP is trying to install it as a multimedia device rather that a soundcard.

I've tried downloading the latest drivers from the web site, same problem, and I've tried a different PCI slot.

The book only supplies directions for installation up to WinNT.
Can anyone provide me with step by step instructions for installing under XP?

I've emailed M-Audio but have not yet received a response. I guess the Sept 11 anniversary has slowed things down a bit.

Thanks in anticipation.

I didn't have any problems getting mine installed under XP. Installed without a hitch. A soundcard is basically a mutimedia device. I used IRQ#5 for the audiophile and made sure it didn't share with another device. This is done thru your BIOS setup.
There is another issue....I think the retail version of XP is a little screwy where if you install a new device in your system you have to contact MS for some kind of code or some crap like that, although I may be wrong.

That only comes into play if you change more than like 5 peripherals/components in your PC at one time. Besides, the process is quite painless and quick anyways.

I've swapped through a couple video cards and soundcards and never had do to any reactivation or call up MS.

key items that trigger an XP activation are network cards, SCSI cards, and the motherboard itself. Of course if you change the motherboard you're probably going to have to reinstall XP anyways...

I looking to buy and intall a 2496 under XP soon myself, so I'm interested in hearing any more feedback out there. Any other XP / 2496 owners out there?

Somebody please help. I'm at my whit's end over this.
The card is fine because I installed it in a Win98 machine as a test and it worked perfectly.

Somebody locally said I should be in "PC MODE" to install the card. Does anybody know what this is? Can't find anything in the help.

Still haven't had a response for M-Audio. Rather annoyed about that.

hi, Mark:

I just installed XP recently with my Audiophile. What I did was reformating C drive, removing win98se, and installed XP Home, I hope this applies to your situation.
After XP was installed, I went into Device Manager, remove the soundcard diver XP provided, then put the Audiophile's CD in, and restart my computer. So, when windows asks you for the driver for the new found hardware, I chose look for the driver manually. so i located the driver in the CD, and there it was. Done.

I hope this helps, i know how painful it is to go thru stuff like that.

just did a test. You can uninstall whatever driver there is right now in Device Manager, then just go to: Action>Rescan (instead of rebooting) this should save u some time if u have to make several attempts.

good luck

I've been using the 2 for just under a year now - no major problems.

Thanks Brzilian.

Mark, I've been doing PC tech work for awhile, and I have no idea what they are talking about when they say "PC mode".

One thing you might try it this: Go into the computer BIOS (done on most PCs by hitting the DELETE key during bootup) and looking for the setting that says PLUG N PLAY OS - YES or NO. Switch it to NO. This prevents the OS (XP) from taking full control of IRQ assigning from the motherboard. XP likes to assign multiple devices to the same IRQ, and this has been known to cause problems like what you describe.

OK. I ended up reinstalling XP with the card installed, and then updated the driver (as A1A2 did). Works a treat.
Thanks for all the sugestions.

Still rather anoyed at the lack of response from M-Audio
