hello everyone.

i used to use the freeware KRISTAL KREATIVES to record my stuff. basically because i didn't know anything beyond what this program offered... and i loved every minute.

but i learned new tricks. then upgraded to ADOBE AUDITION. big jump.

but its way too heavy for my computer. when i use more than 4 of its built-in compressor plugins... my cpu usage goes to 100% and everything chops up.

so i need something in between kristal and audition, if you guys catch my drift.
audition has many features, great, but most i wont need for now. i need basic stuff. a good parametric eq, good compressors, good reverb... and basically thats it. no video capability... no crazyness.

any ideas would be great.
i downloaded mixcraft 2.5... but it seems pretty cheap as well. can't even zoom in the wave track properly.

thanks

What version of Audition are you running?

You can lock the tracks after getting each one set up with the right effects.

In the settings dialog you can select a "save locked tracks" checkbox that will help out bigtime with the session opening time when dealing with locked tracks.

You can also try the program called REAPER.

Ditto Reaper. I used it on an older PIIIm laptop to record. Worked great.

how so?
the 'lock in time' option?

in any case... i need to hear the mix in full, with all my used plug ins on... so i can hear how it all fits.

(i'm using aa 2.0)

is locking the same thing as muting?

im going to check out reaper right now.

Another vote - and a link - to Reaper. Reaper makes a selling point out of it's small footprint and low memory consumption and you have 30 days to decide if you want to pay the $40 shareware fee and keep using it.

Download it HERE.

.

niiice, perfect.
i was at this crazy site, where i couldnt download a thing, kept throwing me around.

so... this reaper looks interesting.

let me ask a basic question about it:

do i have unlimited tracks? (i actually only need about... 25 at MOST)

In AA 2.0 they call it Freezing a track instead of locking a track, but it's the same thing, when frozen, AA will create a temporary version of the track with the effects added to it, and use that for playback instead of doing the realtime effects processing.

A frozen track should sound exactly the same as it does in real time.

When used with many tracks this will free up considerable CPU power, it does however cause the session folders to be bigger.

well, i gave it an overall look.
verified that i hav unlimited tracks.
uploaded all the plugins i have.
its basically all set.
expect for that lovely parametric eq that came with audition.
is it considered a vst or dxi plugin? where i can upload it to reaper?

that would be spectacular.

tomorrow i'll give it the full test. mix a song of mine. and see how it goes.
but i can already tell it will in no way be too heavy for my computer. i can compresso all i want! yeah.
dam, my windows messenger uses more memory than reaper does.

love it.

thanks you guys, i'll post again here soon

WOW!
i had no idea about that. it does sound obvious reading it now though. why real time process it everytime you playback?
perfect. im gonna try that out.

and of course, its non destructive right?

and when i mix down to wave, stereo track, do i have to unlock (unfreeze) it all?

No you don't have to unfreeze everything to do a mixdown, a frozen track can be unfrozen instantly for making re-adjustments to the effects, then re-frozen, that may take a minute or two.

It is non-destructive.

What are you using for a soundcard/interface?

strryder...
you just saved me countless hours... and stress time.

freezing is working wonderfully.

i have been fumbling around this problem for days and days.

thanks a lot man.

and i believe this is not the first time you have helped me out.
i remember some old threads we talked before in.

thanks man, you're great.

oh, im a guerilla recorder all the way.
i use a sb live. mic my amp with a sm57, and go straight into the soundcard. straight to my sequencer.

you can hear some tracks here: www.myspace.com/labmusica

its basically how i want my sound. although i am remixing all those tracks as now ive learned a few tricks, as i said. im pumping the kicks and snares a lot more, and rounding out the bass. guitars will stay pretty much the same.
