need help getting started please

Hello all,
totally new at all this here and need help. I have some decent gear (mics, mixer, 4track and such) I used back when I played in bands years ago to record. Want to go digital now and create on my own...have a HP pavilion 750 n with 512 memory, cakewalk homestudio XL and a motu 828... tried messing around with multitracking acoustic guitar tracks and couldnt get past latency when trying to add second track ...what do I need or what am I doing wrong? Someone told me I might need a new sound card or more memory in my pc....any thoughts and if so what are good choices for the sound card? much thanks in advance...

you should call motu. you don't need a sound card, that's what the motu 828 is.

what do you mean by "past lastency when trying to add second track"?

Sorry like I said I'm really new to digital recording

Please bear with me as I'll try to do my best to explain: When I tried to lay a second track down the delay of what I was adding in my headset was overbearring....made it impossible to record....

there is a thing called the buffer size... that you should be able to adjust in your soundcard control panel... (not sure how to find that in Cakewalk)... if the buffer size is too large you will get latency while monitoring... if it is too small you may get audio drop outs and skipping while playing back... you need to adjust this to the optimum level for your setup... try asking in the Cakewalk forum

good luck

in cakewalk it's under Options/Audio. There you can change the drivers as well. Be sure to use ASIO, turn the latency as low as your CPU will allow, and like handsome said, play with the buffer sizes to suit your setup. Alot of making effective use of your computer equipment is much time spent trial and error. It can get frustrating at times, but you will learn so much about your computer and your audio hardware when you spend the time with it. It's also nice that forums like this are around to help out as well.

thanks cawhite12 this site is really great and I'll give all of your advice a try.
