Hey everyone,
As you can see, this is my first post. I am 25 yrs. old and have always had a strong interest in music. I love listening to house and vocal trance music (techno) if you will and have a good ear for music. Anyways, what I want to do is eventually be able to create a CD with a selection of songs of my choice and be able to mess around with them. For example, I would like to choose a song(s) of my liking and add beats, sounds, and take some of the lyrics and maybe put them to a different tempo etc... I am totally clueless and new to this sort of thing, so I don't know the correct terminology for a lot of things, but that is why I am here (to learn). I guess what I would like to do is to be able to take an older song and make a remix of it with an entirely different beat, but still have a similar sound to it as the original so you can still tell what song it is. I am not interested in creating songs from scratch,(I don't write songs, sing or play instruments) but looking to change/customize existing music. I have been looking around online to see what my best option would be to be able to do what I want and came across Adobe Audition, formerly known as Coll Edit Pro. There is a DJ online that I like who has made several compilation CD's with Cool Edit Pro (I beleive) and would love to be able to do the same. I am not looking to spend crazy money on a program because I am not looking to make money doing it professionally (not yet anyway). It will be more of a hobby for me. I am VERY picky about music and would like my work to have a good quality sound to it and be able to mix song #1 into song #2 smoothly without sounding horrible and so on and so on. I know this is not going to be easy to learn, but it has always been something I've wanted to do, so I am willing to put a lot of time and effort into it. My question is: what is the best software to be able to do what I want. I know everyone will have their different opinions on what is the best, but I would like to hear everyone's opinion. Any advise you could give me would be appreciated whether it is what I should be using, literature, other websites, etc.. I just don't want to spend my money on something that I will grow out of quickly and get bored of, but I do want something fairly easy to use since I am clueless to creating music. Everyone really seems to know a lot around here, so hopefully you can all help me out. Thanks in advance.

hi,

take a look at acid 4.0 by sonic foundry. there is a demo on sony's media website. acid is not a .wav file or audio editor like cooledit but it's strength is in building music with loops and pre recorded sound files. it can load many different types of files and version 4 has a piano midi editor plugin. I use it very little so it would be best to look at the sonic foundry forum on this bbs or search google for 'acid 4.0 reviews' to learn about it.

cooledit is very good but the midi support is not to strong if I remember correctly. I will look at it and change this post if I find out different. I'm on our mac right now and all my pc daw software is in the studio.

quite a few of the shareware mutitrackers like multitrackstudio, do a good job with midi. I just am finishing a mix with this one and like it's simplicity of design.

cheers,
baba

I have spent a lot of time trying out varous open source Audio softwares. I still go back to Cool Edit. The learning curve with Cool Edit is a lot less that a lot of the other sofwares that I have played with. I would recommend that one.

I will warn you if you try the trial of Sonic Acid the demo's do not let you save your work! Also the export will have a lot of what they call "white noise" which is like static sounds on the tune that you mix down too. Very Annoying. Adobe is wonderful and puts out a full working version of the trial software.

More questions

Thanks for all the info so far guys. I was also wondering what other kinds of things am I going to need? If I did happen to go with something like Cool Edit Pro, what will I need besides that when it comes to my computer, soundcards, external audio source, etc.. Like I said, I have absolutely no clue when it comes to this stuff. Will I need special recording equipment if I want to record live streams from online? Does it sound like I will be able to what I want with taking songs from CD's and messing with them, or is my best bet to get MP3's, vinyl, what? I guess what I'm asking is what is the most common way/source that other people get their music from? Also, if I want to change the tempo or create "loops" as you guys call it, will I be able to do it on a program like Cool Edit Pro, or will I need an additional program like Acid Pro or something similar? I'm new to this so bear with me, but that's why I'm posting here in the newbie section. Any othere info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
