I have two turntables and a mixer, and I am trying to connect them up to my computer so I can record and make songs/music. I just need help with how to hook up my mixer to my computer. I bought an adapter that converts my two rca plugs into one small headphone size adapter and I plugged this into my soundcard (where there was a picture of a michrophone) but I couldn't hear anything. Also does anyone know how to record after I hook all this up, and If I need special software? Thanks alot.

Two things -- you need either a special phono preamp, or you can run the phono through a stereo reciever and record from its tape or aux outs, just like you used to record cassettes from LPs, if you're old enough to have done that :)... the signal from a turntable is not line level, plus it has the RIAA equalization curve applied to it, so even if you could crank the levels it would sound odd...
Oh, wait, doubtless your mixer does this already, you can take the line outputs of your mixer like you described.. never mind!

But the second thing I was going to suggest might then be relevant -- I wouldn't be surprised if the line in on your sound card is disabled. It seems that typical consumer cards have this input disabled for recording for some strange reason. See this article:

http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Lessons/WindowsMixer.htm
which should tell you how to check this and enable it if it is indeed disabled.

As usual, AlChuck fully answered your question. :)

You will want to connect the OUT of the mixer to the LINE IN on you computer, not the MIC IN.

As, AlChuck said, the LINE IN is muted. The link he gave you should answer all of your questions on the process.

If you have anymore questions, just post us back. :D

Hey, thanks alot guys! You really helped me out with this.
Thanks,
Quincy
