Hi I'm a newbie and new to this forum. I have an Audiophile 2496 soundcard with a pair of studio monitors connected to it's analog outputs. In the analog inputs I plan to plug in a DMP3 preamp. My question is, how do I get headphones into all of this(so i can hear what i've just played while recording a new track over it). Also, once I do somehow get these headphones plugged in, do I have to do anything special so that I can actually hear what I'm playing as I'm recording?
The only solution that I can think of(which is less than ideal) would be to just plug the headphones into the analog outs of the soundcard while recording, then plug back in the monitors while mixing.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

p.s. I don't want to have to buy a mixer, so any ideas that doesn't involve buying a mixer would be great.

i know you don't want to hear it, but a mixer, or a headphone amp, would be what you need if you want it to sound halfway decent. Just go to rat shack and buy a crappy 2 channel headphone mixer and it'll atleast *work*... i'm not going to guarantee satisfactory results though.

that's fine, i don't really care about the sound quality that comes out of the headphones, i just need to use them as a reference so that i can record something new and listen to what i've recorded at the same time.

so to get the headphone mixer into my sound card, i would have to unplug my monitors right? In other words, the headphone mixer would go into the outs of my sound card? Thanks again.

That audiophile has more than one output doesn't it? You'd be able to have monitors and headphones coming out of it...but to do effective recording you'd turn the monitor outputs off, or turn the speakers off, or turn that signal down...so that you only hear the headphones as you track over.

I think I would have to agree with shiatzu. I have a similar setup and put a mixer in the middle w/ headphone outs on it. It works great.

HeyHeyMyMy, can you tell me what you mean when you put the mixer in the middle? In the middle of the dmp3 and audiophile 2496? I'm a total newbie, so if you have time, can you explain where the cables actually are connecting to in all of this(i.e. a cable going from the audiophile's in's to the dmp3). I just really need to get the details of the setup up right so that i can FINALLY start recording.

Dmp outs to 24/96 ins......24/96 outs (left and right) to mixer in, a small mixer should have a headphone jack and a volume control for it to, then the main outs from the mixer to the monitors just turn down the main outs when you are tracking

See Carter's post above. PM me if you need any more help. Good luck and welcome to the board.
