need help choosing equipment

Hi

we are in the process of getting a new Computer and we want some recording equipment with it. Our old 48 track machine doesn't work anymore and I was wondering what is out there to replace it using the PC instead of buying a stand alone unit again ?
I want to do 24 or 48 track recording, 24 tracks is the minimum.

Any suggestions ?

I love my MOTU 1224 ( http://www.motu.com ) and Cool Edit Pro ( http://www.syntrillium.com ). The MOTU units come in a base kit with a PCI card and the rack unit, and you can have three of those units plugged into the same PCI card. I don't know how many tracks you need to record simultaneously, but each of those MOTU units (1224 or 2408) supports 8 analog inputs. The software (Cool Edit Pro) supports 64 tracks.
 
Depends what your budget is. I MOTU seems to be a nice hardware but why would you buy a Benz and then put an escort engine in it? Skip the CoolEdit and go with something a little more professional like Logic Audio or at least Cubase.(I can vouch for Logic) Or if your budget allows check out PARIS, Then you will be recording with a VERY professional system that has recorded a couple Plat albums and was used on the hit "AMAZED" which broke several records by staying number 1 for endless weeks. As well as a few other albums. Anyway I am sick as a dog so I am out of here. Check out PARIS and if you can afford it that is by FAR the way to go. http://www.emu.com You will be glad you did.

P.S. A friend of mine is getting it, so I will see how it goes if it works like I have heard I too am off to PARIS. Something about the NAMM show where the guy put on 59 REN compressors and didnt phase the machine and it hardly even uses your Computer at all.
 
So tell me, what's wrong with Cool Edit Pro? I have tried Cubase and I didn't like the interface at all. I found it more difficult to work with than it needs to be. I am getting exactly what I need out of CEP and I don't really understand why Cubase has the "more professional" reputation it seems to have.
 
I wouldnt use either one of them to tell you the truth. The only audio software worth buying in my opinion is Logic Audio.
 
I heard that Digital performer is quite da bomb and that it rates up there with Logic audio, but I suspect that more studios have Logic than digital performer.
 
Forgot about them, Yeah from what I hear its a cool program as well. Messed with it for about 10 min seems like it would be a good option.
