Need Help choosing a recording prog please!

I am just starting to get into home recording. I have been playing guitar for over 10yrs but have no I dea where to start when it comes to recording programs. I have a HP P4 3.0Ghz laptop and a M-Audio OmniStudio USB interface. I need some direction of where to go next. I dwnloaded a trial version of Sonar 4 and whas able to lay down a few tracks, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $$$. Any feedback would be great thanks.

Don't throw that quick on Sonar. You probably don't need all it's extra features yet. If you play guitar and just are about to begin digital recording, Cakewalk HomeStudio 2 or Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro could be what you need. It's alot cheaper, and powerfull to start. Read comparison chart on their site to know their features. If you're not sure, come back here, we'll help you out

if you want inexpensive under 80 dollar software alternatives.
search under my name. ive posted lots of tips in the past year.
including very low cost mics, mixers,monitors,effects, recording tecxhniques eg...using spkrs as mics,
computer set up etc.

try audacity it's free

the free audacity audio multitrack recorder/editor works very well. there is no midi support or notation feature but for audio recording it's pretty cool.

I second the HS2004. Not as fully loaded as the SONAR packages but still very capable...especially for a newb.

Home Studio 2 XL!!! Cheap, plenty of features, easy to use. I've tried other more expensive programs but I want to make and record music not take a freakin college course on a program that will be outdated in a couple of years.
Guitar Tracks is pretty cool but there's no midi. Even if you don't have any midi gear odds are you'll want that capability at some point so why limit yourself?
