I was wanting help on choosing a mic here is what I was thinking about

Dynamic- Shure SM 58
Condensor- Behringer B1

both run at around $100 each which one is better by that I mean Dynamic or Condensor and if neither one of those is any good can someone suggest something for under $200 and also if I get a condensor mic do I need to buy a pre amp because some ppl say yes some say no and I trust a lot of ppl on this board with these questions because yall seem to know what your talking about but please help

I Forgot Something

And if I get any kind of mic do I need to get a shockmount for it and what all does a shockmount really do???? Another question is if I buy another Dynamic mic do I need a Shockmount for a dynamic and even if I buy a condensor do I need one so simply I'm asking is a shockmount a necessity or is it just good to have????

It depends on what you are plugging it into. If you are going into a sound card you will need a pre with phantom power for the condensor.

If you are going into a console you will need phantom power if it is not provided by the console itself. If it's a crappy console (read: crappy pre-'s) you would also want to invest in a better preamp.

Personally, I would not use an SM-58 to record with, but folks here have done it. I would choose the SM-57 instead.

A dynamic does not require phantom power to operate.

Almost forgot your shockmount question.

All that does is isolate the mic from the stand to eliminate low frequency rumble and handling noise if moving a hot mic.

Depending upon your application and environment, you may or may not need it.
