I'm starting to get more serious about doing some home recording and need some advice on which direction to go in purchasing stuff. I run a computer consulting biz so have access to lots of good PC's so do I get software based recording stuff and if so what software is the best suited for what I want to do? If I go this route, should I invest in one of those hardware based mixers (like the Roland Studio Package pro)?

Or do I go the hardware route like the Korg D1600?

Some background info:
-spent several years doing occasional studio recording so I have a bit of experience recording and mixing
-I've got Powertracks Pro and have played around with it. I'm hoping there's something better out there in the software category
-looking to spend around $2,500 but could go as high as $4,500
-have an immediate need to do sound recording for commercials for my business, would also like to play around doing music using midi sequencing like Band in a box

Thanks in advance for guidance.

will you be recording drums or have need for a multiple channels......

Id go the PC/soundcard route........

I would say multi-tracking is a must. I doubt I would ever record live drums (sorry live drummers).

TIA
