don't forget the importance of having a decent acoustic environment. You can have top of the line recording gear, but if you don't have a good room to record in, it's gonna sound like warmed over crap.

You said you wanted it to sound decent by todays standards. If you don't get a decent acoustic environment, it's gonna sound like a cat hissing whether the cat is in the room or not!!!
 
Don't I feel like a goof ball now. I'm quoting a post that is almost a year old.
