Need help assembling my PC Recording setup.

Hey, I want to be able to record about 2 to 8 tracks into my computer at once. I really have to be as cheap as possible. Here is what I got:

-"brand new" Dell Dimension 2350 Desktop (256 MB SDDRAM, 60 gig hard-drive, Pentium 4 processor, Windows XP, CD burner, )-->

(-Sonic Foundry)
-factory Harmen Kardon speakers (bottom of the line for what comes with the Dell new).

So what else do I need? How do I make the connection from my guitar preamp//or//microphone (miked speaker) to my PC? Don't I need an A/D converter? What's firewire? Do I need a mic pre if I just go direct from my guitar preamp to the computer? Do I need a mic pre for the microphone (if I'm miking the speaker) before my signal goes into the computer? Thanks, I'm just trying to put together a songwriting/small scale album and demo recording station.
 
Several options:
You can get an external mixer with mic pre's and 4-8 chl inputs.
Then a good quality PCI card such as a audiophile 24/96.
Or, a PCI card with a breakout box such as the Delta 44 or 66 or 1010 and forget the mixer.
Or the cheap route...use your existing soundcard and get a 8 chl mixer with mic pre's.
Oh, and you can use your guitar procc. outputs for a direct in connection to your soundcard.

PCI card and Breakoutbox

I think this is going to be my route now. I want something like the Delta 44, but I want to be able to send it a mic signal, 1/4" guitar signal, 1/4" line level signal. Any suggestions.

I guess if I wanted to send a mic signal, I'd have to have a mic preamp. Check this out:

I like how it has a mic preamp as well as serving as a breakout box. Is this compatible with the Delta 44?

Omni!!!

Yes, I've been checking out the Omni. The Omni gives me all the connectivity that I need. Can I just buy the Omni and an appropriate PCI Card from M-Audio without any software? I have software, I just need a break out box that satisfies my three requirements as well as connects to a good PCI card.
 
Omni Sound Card

Well, I can buy the Omni by itself. What kind of sound card comes with the Omni Studio Package? Can I just buy that sound card seperately as well? That's the core of my confusion. I wonder what the price comparison would be.
