I recently bought a blackface and LX20. Can I sync these machines without a brc? also, I'm looking for info for a card to dump 16 tracks of adat into my computer with a sonar 3 program. Thanks

The two machines will sync, no problem. You just need the 9 pin sync cable to connect the two machines together and they'll chase and lock. While the LX20 can play 16 bit tapes, the audio (if erecorded on a black face first) will be inverted. As long as play back is on the deck that recorded it, this shouldn't be a problem.

Look for a Hammerfall 96/52 soundcard. This will give you 24 channels of ADAT optical in and out. I used a very similar setup a few years ago in my studio, but have long since moved past it. The good news, it's affordable, and it's rock solid:) Oh yeah, the 96/52 is manufactured by RME.

If you're using Win 2000 or XP, the RME 96/52 is probably the best ADAT I/O lightpipe card, with the most current and trouble-free windows drivers. If you're using win98SE or can use it, the Sonorus Studi/o card does 16 adat I/O, compensates for the blackface storing the data on the tape in inverted phase, and uses ASIO driver for low latency. There is a Win2K/XP driver for the Studi/o that works but not with ASIO. You could also use a MOTU 2408 or 2408 mkII and get 24 adat optical I/O and 8 analog I/O as well.

Thanks for the great info!

This is all new to me, and I'm thankful for the help. I don't know the questions to ask until I run across issues. I'm sure there will be a few. :) Thanks again. Chuck

motu

It sounds like the motu is the most versatile way to go. Are there any problems with this setup and xp? Is it currently in production? what should I budget for one. Thanks again, Chuck

Good question. I've heard there could be problems with the 324 cards which is what I have. The 2408 mkIII probably will but I have no personel experience with one.

The biggest problem with MOTU is the hit or miss chance of getting it to run stably in your system. Also, their tech support is absolutely awful. If you do go the Motu route, consider buying it from Sweetwater so that you can get access to their tech support. IMHO, their tech support is MUCH better than many manufacturers offer. Also, you can't run 24 channels of ADAT optical and 8 analog at the same time on the MOTU. You can do 16 channels of optical and 8 analog though. I switched from a MOTU 2408 to an REM solution. Instantly all headaches dissappeared, not to mention that the converters definately sound better.
