I would like to purchase a digital recorder of at least 8 tracks but I have no idea what is good out on the market having never owned one before.

Can anyone shed some light as to the best recorder out there for 1500 dollars or less?

Thanks in advance!

No one has any suggestions as to what I should get?

I could really use some guidance

You should think about going with a computer. Are you looking to record a full band or just yourself?

Just myself an a couple guys that get together and play occasionally.

Well if you have a good computer then go that way You will need a sound card ,you will have to figure out how many tracks you want to record at the same time 2,4,8,12,24 and go from there.

Yeah...i'd have to agree with norm...the computer's the best bet i'd think. For $1000 you could get a soundcard with 8 ins/outs or more, plus, you'd have the editing ability of the computer, plus the ability to add more tracks as needed. Also, it'd be alot easier to upgrade....if you've got a PC at home that might work, i'd try that route. Check out the Computer Recording forum here and see what everyone's saying....

Yeah a computer with an 8 channel sound card like the MOTU 828 is they way to go.

If you must use tape, ADAT or DA-88 is also a good choice.

Im not real goodwith computers which is why i was just going to get a hard drive multi-track unit that was all ready to go.

But if a computer is the best way to go I will look into it. Thanks for the tip on the Korg as well!

If you don’t want to track on PC, but you still want to go digital, you have lots of options open to you. At that price, you could go up to 16 tracks. Besides the Roland stuff, check out the Korg D16 and the D1600 (the latter may be slightly out of your budget). The Akai DPS12i is also a good choice, although a lot of people find it confusing to work with at first. You could also go the cheaper route with the Boss BR8 (8 tracks). They are holding their value OK on ebay, if you wanted to purchase a stepping stone (for around $700).

Good eye Gidge!

The DPS12i is the newer model. This is the 12 (no i) on closeout special. What’s the difference? The new one has a 10 gig drive and the closeout has a 2 gig. Is that a big deal? For $500 less I don’t think so. Especially when it can be backed up to adat or scsi. The layout is the same and the features seem to be nearly identical. Memory prices drop quickly over the years. I think you’re safer economically going with a well designed unit and external storage (IMHO). Check it out… looks like a good deal. Thanks Gidge!

Thanks for the input on these models. I will definitely check into them. WOuld you rate the Akai better than what you can get from Roland?
