Hey everybody! It's been a while since I've posted anything on here and we've been busy working on some new material. Finally got the time to record three tracks, so far we only have drums and one of the 2 guitarists done.

I posted some (really) rough mixes on nowhereradio; The only thing that I'm really looking for is drum feedback, ideas, etc. Two of the songs only have the first couple minutes due to being ass-long songs and not enough file space on NWR.

Let me know what you think! We worked really hard on recording the drums, and I'm pretty pumped about the sound, in our shitty little studio...

Ok, I don't think I can direct link the files, but if you go here:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1349&alid=-1

all three of these songs are new and I'd love to get feedback on them.

Thanks a lot everybody!
Cheers
Rick

DAMN FINE JOB ON DRUMS

ahhh!!! Metal! Really good drum sound due. For this type of music you are right on the money. Some people might mention that your bass drum is too clicky but i think it is really fitting for this stuff. I think you guys were on the same BW&BK as my band. Good stuff! Care to share what type of setting you are recording in, what gear, drums, processing?

You guys remind me of Black Label Society...meets Metallica.
That is a compliment by the way.

Hey cool man! Are you talking about the knuckletracks or the reviews?

What's your band called?

Anyways we're recording everything on computer, with a Delta 1010 for an interface. I have an old 80s Allen and Heath mixer that I use for mic preamps (kind of scratchy pots but it seems OK) I mean hell it's not classical right!

The drummer uses Pearl Custom series I think...the drums are pretty old and they're so warped they're pretty much oval he says! But with new heads they're pretty good. He puts cotton balls in the toms for a soft dampener...

For mikes:
Kick: Sennheiser E602
Snare: SM57 on Top, SM58 on bottom
Toms: CAD cheapie mikes from a drum mic kit
Overheads: A Rode NT1 and a CAD small diaphram mike.

Yeah the clicky kick, it seems to be what every drummer wants! Stu is a big vinnie paul fan... Heheh well I just want to make the poor guy happy I mean it's his only joy in life... Actually I don't mind that sound.

Because the drums sounded a little dull, I knew that I'd need to do a lot of EQ so I gated the kick and snare, and manually trimmed the tom tracks. The Snare top and bottom were on seperate tracks so I could blend them.

I compressed the kick and the toms fairly lightly

Other than that, Waves RVerb and some EQ with a lot of treble added to the kick and toms (It's a pretty dead room with carpeted floors so the drums come out kind of dull)

They are a little dry right now I think, maybe a touch more reverb...

WESTPOINT:

I dont mind the clicky kick, but give the drum its meat back. You whole mixed is way too light on the low mids. I couldn't hear a bass guitar, so I'd give the kick some more push in the 100-200 and 800-1000 range.

But, thats just me :)

Good Luck
Chris

SittinIdol,

I think you did a really good job tracking/mixing this (I'm listening to the first one right now) Everything can be heard real well even when played at low volume (is there a bass tho? I'm not sure if it's overpowered by the guitars or you haven't tracked it yet).

I think this track is a great start, really, with a little more ambience, it will really rock!!

Great job

Al

That's a kick-ass drum sound you got there. The whole thing sounds great and the song itself (No Title) really rocks. The only nit I'd pick with the drums is the hihat sounds very thin and papery when he's got it open, it hardly makes it through.
Good job.

Hey, my band i guess was on different KT , than yours. My band is Emotional Flatline. We were reviewed in like issue 67, and on the same KT, that came with it. We got a pretty shitty review, like a 6-7 or seven outta 10. EERRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!! But seriously your stuff really caught my attention on there. If you guys like Pantera you should check out some of my bands new shit. It should be up in the next few weeks. Again really nice job on the drums, and i am down with the click!

B.L.S., Metallica, Pantera...sounds like a good mix of the three, and something altogether different at the same time...very good

Right on Analitical man! Let me know when your stuff is up for download and I'll check it out for sure! drop me an email at info@sittinidol.com

Where are you guys from?

ewwwwww ... this is gooooood ... kewl !

I plugged the viola into my amp to jam with this, cool, thanks for sharing, I love it without the vocal, then I can just stretch out the whole time ... cool

In the intro, some wailing viola, slow, lots of vibrato, and out at 00:20.

Some dirty cello, rythmically punching in quarter notes at 00:33, and then 8ths for rythm starting at 00:47, and then out at 00:54.

Cello joins again with the off the string staccato 16ths at 1:00, and then out at 01:14.

At 1:27, a counter melody with shredded viola, wailing up above the rythm guitar line.

Real high, sustained tones over the section that starts at 2:00, following the root of the guitar, 2 octaves above that root, just moving a half-step ya know ...

Then at 2:37 walking down with the guitar, and then violins out.

You could easily end the tune here at 2:40 just letting that chord ring to fade ...

This shit fawking rawks dode ! I'm tellin' ya.

Solid and confident instrumental performing here ! Quality sonics, great mix. There's a lot of room here for you to release some compression in places and recieve even greater dynamics and emotion from some of the passages, although I would not say it is overcompressed at this point.

Wow! That is some cool shit that you came up with. You should record that and put it up!

Glad you liked the tune, I wish I could post the whole thing but there's not enough room for the whole mp3. It comes in at about 6:15 in total.

Rock on! And hey record that viola and post it, I'd love to hear that!

drums sound badass..congrats. ha.

I think you are missing a low end. sounds like, almost, you have no bass being played in there.

so, add some low end, and it'll be crunkt.

Drums sounds are very good. Let`s hear some bass with it and see if the kick still keeps it`s voice. It may take a little upper mid on the snare to lift it after you add bass. I really like this myself.

These sound great, these are Pearl Sessions, aren't they?

I'm envious for a few reasons:
1. Your set is better.
2. You can obviously mic each drum.

Mind telling us your setup?

Thanks to everybody who's replied.

Shackrock: It sounds like there's no bass because there's no bass. We haven't recorded it yet!:)

Anyhow thanks a lot everybody your comments have helped a lot. I'll keep posting mixes as we add and change stuff!

fatmusiek:

don't worry about it, you're not an idiot!

Thanks for the comments on the guitars, we still have to record the tracks for the other guitar player!

Listening on headphones and the drums sound real nice! Very well tracked and the mix sounds good to me.

This is definitely an accomplishment! I'm working on micing some drums myself and it is one of the hardest and most frustrating things I've ever done, especially with wondering how it is all going to sound in the final mix...

Congratulations! You have done a great job!

:D

yeah dude, whats your mic setup? :D Im micing some drums this weekend and I want that sound. I listened to no title and it rips.
I really want to hear the final version. Good stuff...

Thanks for the kind words Myx62. The mic setup that I used is up top, third post from the top!

rock on
Rick

on my speakers... all the cymbals are a little quiet, especially the hi hat. the hi hat sounds too much like he's hitting pie tins or something. all the actual drums sound nice.
