My setup: Sonar XL, Aardvark Q10, Roland XP-30.

Questions:

1. When I choose inputs and outputs for an audio track in Sonar, I have to choose pairs of inputs or outputs, rather than single inputs and outputs. Is Sonar not capable of addressing all of the Q10's inputs and outputs individually? Is this a shortcoming of the Beta driver I'm using? I'd like to keep inputs 1-4 for mics, plug my XP-30's left channel into input 5 and right channel into input 6, and use 7 and 8 for bass and guitar. Ideally, I'd be able to keep the stereo separation from the XP30 when I record audio from it. Right now, when I arm an audio track and select input 5/6, I get audio recorded that appears to me to be a mono track, panned center. Both speakers playing exactly the same thing. Boring!

2. When I try to use any audio effects on the audio I record, I get an error message that the effect doesn't support that bit rate/resolution or something like that. I checked, and I'm set up to record 44.1 at 24 bit. Do I need to change these settings? Will the effects only work on 16-bit audio? Or is this a problem w/ Aardvark's driver?

3. I'm using the XP-30 instrument definition that came with Sonar. Blech! Is there a better one out there? I'd ideally like to see patch mode definitions that group all the similar sounds together like the "category" mode on the synth itself does. I don't want to have to hunt for my "big hair lead guitar." I want it to be right next to my "distorted electric guitar 2" or whatever.

4. Has anybody played w/ the ReValver SE amp simulator? How does it sound? The only working electric guitar in my studio right now is an Epiphone LP Xtreme. I have the option of recording through a Peavey practice amp into an SM-57 or direct into the Q10 with amp simulation in ReValver. Any thoughts?

I know I have lots of questions. Thanks for your patience!

You should be able to select Left 1/2, Right 1/2, or Stereo 1/2. Left 1/2 should equal input #1. Right 1/2 should be input #2. Stereo 1/2 should give you inputs 1 & 2 simultaneously. Stereo 1/2 should also record a stereo track, where the first two choices should record a mono track. The same logic applies to 3/4, 5/6, etc.

When you record a mono track and play it back panned center you are SUPPOSED to get the same thing in both speakers. That's the way it works. If you want something different in each speakers, change the panning.

Dunno. I work with a Delta 1010 and have no problem applying Sonar's effects at 24 bits and 44.1. However, there was another guy on this BBS using Sonar and an Aardvark card that complained he could only get playback at 16 bits. Could be a driver issue.

I'll leave 3 & 4 for someone else. I don't use external midi synths or revalver.

I AM!
but i'm using cake 9 and the direct pro 2496, and even though i could record/playback 24bit, i can't now that i reinstalled windows. and to make things worse i installed a sblive card, and it's not working at all. crap!

someone please help me (since cakewalk support won't)!

Thanks, dachay2tnr!

Postal, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for both cards? Have you check for IRQ conflicts?

i did. what worked the 24bit problem was to check audio > options > advanced > leave unpacked data unjustified.
as for the soundblaster, i had to uninstall both soundcards, and install the soundblaster first.
now i can playback/record 24bit, and midi, but i'm getting lots of dropouts, which i'm working on. i'll search a little bit the bbs, and the cakewalk egroup, and if i can't work it out, i'll post something here.

So, any thoughts on the questions below?

Thanks!

the only s/w guitar amp simulator i've used is cakewalk's amp sim. it's pretty bad, i think. it might be a little useful if you're going for distorted sounds, but clean or lightly overdriven sounds are crap.
