So my daughter's bunny chewed through the wires for the family computer speaker system (Altec Lansing w/subwoofer) - Bad Rabbit!! I wanted something better anyway! What I don't want is something where all three components are hard wired. That damn rabbitt only ate one wire but they aren't unpluggable!! Any suggestions given the following criteria:

Decent sound and power-audiophile not required.

Relatively inexpensive-say $150 or less

Take apartable-that pesky rabbit is still around.

The computer is a Dell Dimension that is used for surfing and gaming and whatnot. It is not my DAW (No rabbits in the studio.). I also use it to listen to stuff in the Clinic so I'd like decent quality.

Thanks folks,

lou

I've got a set of those Altecs (non-bunny-abused) that came with my Dell Dimension and have used them in my office at work for >3 years. The separability of the system is no big issue on PC speakers in this price range.

The reason I took them to work was to avoid cat damage... :)

It WORKED!

May I suggest rabbit stew?

It may be a little more but the Klipsch set is the best set of computer spkrs out there. I think it's called 4.1 ? It's a thx certified 5.1 surround system that really really sounds good.

Thanks for the quick respones guys.

Hey brzilian, which model do you have? The website doesn't say that these units are NOT hardwired, but it doesn't say they are either. Do they come with cable or what do you need - regular speaker wire?

doc-I couldn't possibly eat something with a name!:D

Thanks again,

lou

Sorry, those are a little more than $150, but they're worth it as far as the sound goes.

Hey sub,

We must have been posting concurrently as I missed your suggestion while I was replying. Thanks, I'll check 'em out.

Sometimes it's like a freaking chat room around here. I no sooner post a "Sorry I missed it." and you sneak two more in!:D

Yeah I guess it's a "little" more than $150. I don't think I'm gonna drop four bills on the "family" machine. Tell me this though; Are all these higher end systems wired up independently? I would assume the amp is in the sub and all wires lead there?

Thanks again sub,

lou

Mine are not on the website anymore. I think they've been discontinued. They look alot like the MM700's.

The line out from the PC connects to the sub with a cable with 1/8" jacks on both ends - the cable has its own volume control and mute button. The speakers then connect to the sub in the same fashion as the terminals on a stereo (raw wires clamped into a slot on the sub end).

Yeah, I'm pretty quick. And posting is my game. I'm getting very close to my own avatar! So I'm quick on the responses... Gotta go to work soon.

I assume that they do plug in to the sub. If you check out the 4.1 system I think it's $249 plus $50 rebate. Smame thing without the center channel, and it's only 400 watts.

Fuckin rabbitz! I used to have a blond french angora that did the same thing. They eat alot of other things too. NEVER leave anything green layin around!

Excellent information guys, thank you very much.

I'd say go to your local Best Buy, or Circuit City, or COMPuseless, or MicroCenter, or whatnot, and listen to what they have set up.

I've got the Klipsch system and they rock. They have a 2 +sub system for under $200 I think. There is also another THX system that was around $150 and really rocked. I can't remember the brand but there are only a few THX approved computer speakers.

Do you know you can easily splice those wires? Then you can add in longer cable if you need it. It's only a 2 wire cable and you dont even need to solder them if your carefull.

Thanks RWhite - I'll probably do just that.

Tex - That damn rabbit chewed through the multi conductor main that goes from the sub to the first "tweeter". Not only that, she got it about a half inch from the plug so there ain't much to grab hold of you know? Thanks for the thoughts on Klipsch. I gotta see if I can find a retailer local so I can give 'em a listen.

Don't you have a bestbuy?

Otherwise order them online. You can do a price search online and find them cheaper I bet.
