Need big help

Hello,
I am trying to find out what I need to start recording on my Dell w/ pent. 4, and Windows XP? I play guitar and am going to purchase Cool Edit Pro. I am completely ignorant as to any terminology that is related to computers or recording, and have only experienced recording on a tascam analog 4 track. I don't even know how I am going to hook up to my PC. I am trying to keep it as simple, and inexpensive as possible. Thanks for any help!!!
 
If you are looking to go as inexpensive as possible then the first thing I would recommend is not getting Cool Edit Pro. Not that there is anything wrong with Cool Edit Pro, but for about three hundred less you can get started with n-track and be able to go a long way before outgrowing it.

If you are wanting to go as cheaply as possible you might be able to get sttarted with the sound card in your Dell, however DO NOT use the mic input to the card. Instead get a preamp and go to the stereo line-in. Of course you would be doing much better if you got a serious sound card like an M-Audio Delta.

So a preamp like the audiobuddy, a pair of better-than-radio-shack microphones, n-track, and some cables and you have what you need to get started on the cheap.
 
It's not that I can't afford it. It is just that I have looked at the software and really want it. I just don't want to have to spend a couple of thousand outside of the Cool Edit.

So do I still need a preamp for the cool edit? And can you suggest a quality one? Thanks for the advice.
