Ah, the quest for the perfect vocal mic for my voice......
Mics I have tried:
Shure SM57 - really pretty good, not enough detail and problem with plosives though
SP C1 - emphasized highs do not sound flattering with my nasal voice.
RodeNT1a - bought it, wish I hadn't, something odd/alien sounding
SM7 - sounded like someone put a blanket over my SM57 to avoid plosives
Shure KSM32 - wuf, I like my NT1a and SM57 better than this one
Shure SM58 - not as good as the SM57
Mind you, all of these are through the preamps of a Digi001, Audio Buddy and Behringer ADA8000, so the mics probably are not getting a fair shake
I want the warmth of my SM57 with the clarity of a LDC and I am still looking. I am looking for a mic that sounds as good going in flat on my voice as my SM81 sounds flat on my acoustic, a mic that just fits my voice and sits well in an acoustic instrumentation mix (guitar, mandolin, dobro, Pbass, brushed drums) without extensive EQ tweaks.
So, I am looking for a project studio in the Austin area that has all or some of these mics to try and would let me pay for studio time to compare them on my voice:
EV RE20
Sennheiser MD421
Sennheiser MD441
ADK Hamburg
Shure KSM27
MXL V67
MXL V69
Anything else you have and recommend for < $400-500
Harvey Gerst and Dan Richards both like the Hamburg, so it has to be worth looking into. I could drive to Dallas (Sanger) and pay for the time to do a shootout at Harvey's studio (he has all KINDS of mics,) but I don't relish 8 hours of driving round trip, even if it is to find the Holy Grail of mics for my voice.....
I would prefer to try these through a preamp comparable to the DMP3, Rane MS1b or maybe a Grace 101 or FMR RNP, because that is probably my next step after finding the mic and it's just hard to come up with the $ for anything > $200-500.
Anyone out there within about an hour of drive time from Austin that can help me out?
Thanks,
