PhiloBeddoe said:Sorry, I'm afraid only you can make the decision since it purely depends on your needs. If you love your AC30, then the decision is tough. If you really feel the need for usable versatility, I think the MTS is very good.
I rarely do trades so I'd probably want both unless I didn't like the AC30 or didn't use it very often. I tend to keep stuff around for a rainy day
Best of luck to you man.
PhiloBeddoe said:I'm pretty sure the RM100 head (assuming that's the one in the trade) is $1000 new NOT including modules, which are $200 each new. So, a fully loaded RM100 would be $1600 new.
jonnyc said:Yeah I know it's my decision, but I don't ever use my Vox personally. I'm just a studio engineer that is picky and can't stand it when kids drag in their Marshall MG's thinking they're getting the "Marshall tone". Ultimately I'd love to have both but that isn't finacially viable at the moment. Good news is the Randall has an optional ac30 top boost module.
TelePaul said:could you maybe borrow it for a weekend, track some stuff and compare to the AC30?
jonnyc said:They're coming back in for a session Wednesday. That's what we're going to do.
TelePaul said:Great, then at least you can compare the 'Top Boost' to the real deal.
jonnyc said:Well, Outlaws wouldn't call what I have the "real deal" anyway. But we'll see what kind of sounds we can get out of the Randall. Of course you know if I trade for the Randall I'll probably end up getting all the modules.
TelePaul said:Yeah that'd be cool. Then you could trade me for my AVT![]()
PhiloBeddoe said:OK, if you're just using this for client guitarists with cheap amps and you have no personal attachment to your amp then I think the Randall is the way to go. If any of the clients raise their eyebrows, tell them that Michael Wagener (Master of Puppets mixer among other big hits) uses the MTS system extensively (exclusively?) these days and he has tons of other gear at his disposal.
I'm a guitarist so taking away one of my amps is like taking away a studio owners microphones. Even if it's crappy, it may just be perfect for something someday.

Its the GZ34! There is something magical about sag, and it can't be found without one.
But really, I am sure it will be a good amp. I haven't ever read a single negative comment (outside of general dislike for Randall as a company due to their solidstate amps). And I am sure that neither the Randall or the AC30CC have the overheating problem of the AC30. Those things liked to burn up tubes.
jonnyc said:Well the verdict is in, I'm keeping the Vox. I do not like the way the Randall records at all. I don't know what it is about it but it just does not sit in a mix like my Vox does, even the guy who owns it doesn't think the guitars sound nearly as good, although he's trying to blame everything but the amp, yet all factors are the same. There's also a horrible buzz that the amp puts out that doesn't exist with the Vox, it's not a huge deal but compared to the Vox it isn't very quiet. I told the guy that I felt the Randall would be fantastic for live stuff, being 100 watts and all, but that for recording I really need to stick with the
Vox and just add more amps.
