Need advice on a SOUND CARD

Dear Friends,


I am putting a system together for Music - multimedia and Video Editing (for fun, not at the professional level).

The systems is based on an AMD Athlon 1.4G - Abit KR7A-RAID Mb -

I would like a very complete SOUND CARD. with access for midi (guitar, elec pianno), for recording music, composing, editing and burning to CDs (eventually to DVDs)

I am considering the SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY PLATINUM EX ($214).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine has worked with the Audigy and said that the signal to noise ratio is not good. There is lots of noise that is noticeable in your recording. I haven't had any personal experience with this card but I was going to get one before he mentioned that. I was kind of disappointed in what he had to say about it, I was looking forward to it! Give it a try though if you're using it at a non-pro level. I'm sure it would make a great card and maybe you won't notice anything wrong with it. I also read a review in the Sound On Sound Magazine about the Audigy and they too said it is a satisfactory entry card. Give it a go and let us know what you think!
 
Sounds like you're in the market for a M-Audio Audiophile 2496.
 
I hope I am replying correctly... It's been a while since I've been active in forums. If not, excuse the inexperience.

1- I foud a thread on what I was looking for. The concensus seems to be for the 1010 and the Cport Audio cards. Except, they seem to be to much for my needs. But no question I liked the Cport.

2- Dumb question. I am looking for a good computer "Audio Card." (such as the Sound Blaster Audigy series). HOWEVER, is a "recording Audio Card" the same as an "Audio card????

Or, like in video-editing, where you need the regular "video card" and then the "Capture card" to do the actual video editing? (2 cards)

3- Is it possible to have just one card that does both? (Audio & Recording).

4- But just to make things clear. I just something more sophistated than a regular "Audio Card," that allows me to record music, (from my guitar or old LPs or casettes) edit it, burn it to CDs. Something more advance than the run of the mill Audio cards, bot not as sophisticate as the C-port?

Or to put it another way. Can the Cport be used as a regular Audio card as well???????

What does "S/PDIF I/O" mean?

And maybe you know (or anyone), can I say record a song using my guitar, elec piano and a Mike?.... I heard something about needing "Amplifiers?" pre-Amplifiers.


And again, can the Cport Recording Card be used as a regular Audio-Card?

How many INPUTS/OUTPUTS do you need?

If you only need 4 of each check out the Delta 44. If you only need 4 of each + a SPDIF then look at the Delta 66.

My English is not the best so I apologize for it. I tried asking this question in different ways and I have no succeeded getting a clear answer: Let me try again.

Three questions.

1 - In putting my AMD 1.4G system together and I need to know: Is it possible to have the regular Audio Card (i.e. AUDIGY PLATINUM EX) and a "Recording Audio card" IN ONE UNIT???? In other words, can I buy ONE card that accomplishes both purposes? Or do I need to buy 2 cards? (THIS IS THE MAIN QUESTION)

2 - I like the Cport ($399). ** Would this card do I am asking??? in question 1 ?

3 - I read the definition of "S/PDIF I/O" Something about Sony / Phyllis Digital Interface…. But I still don't understand the significance of it. So let me ask you, in view of my goals (see ADITIONAL INFORMATION - below) do you think I need such a feature? Or could you give a quick explanation of a situation where one might need it?

<ADDITIONAL INFORMATION > INs & OUTs, some one asked??? No, I don't think I will ever need more than 4 Ins. I want this for myself. Maybe another person from time to time. Strictly as a hobby.

I want this "card" to listen to Music and to record tracks. You know. lead guitar, second, Electronic Piano (midi), drums or noise, background and voice… then Mix the music, do loops, experiment with it, Have FUN.

I also want to use the card for inputting Music (LPs) from my record player into my computer, clean the noise, edit it, and make CDs
