My Xmas budget for me is $1,000 and I am looking for more whomp in the vocal recording chain in my studio.
Currently, we have a Rode NTV (big fat tube thing, long discontinued), an AT-4050 and of course a couple of SM-57's. For pres we use a joemeek VC-1 or the pres on our Mackie dXb. We have nice outboard gear (Lex PCM91 and 81 and an Ensoniq DP/4).
What would you recommend for Xmas presents of about $US 1,000?
I am currently considering two paths: (1) AEA RS84 ribbon *or* a combo of a Grace design 101 mic pre and a Shure SM7.
Vocals are throaty male and sweet female singer; pop, jazz, some rock. No need for instruments - this is a purely vocal path upgrade.
Advice?
