Hi all this section to the froum is kind of new to me.

Ok here's what i need.

I need a microphone for recorrding loud sounds without distortion.

I record engine sounds from Bulk carriers and Container ships, and it is very difficult to record sometimes because the noise is so loud the meter pings hard over on the input level. The only way i fix it is with a condenser module that allows me to fine tune the input level.

Is there any good type of microphone specificly designed for this type of recording ??

Any help would be greatly apreciated

Keith.

P.S if you want some samples of the engines i have recorded i have quite a good collection now. Even some sounds from Steam powered ships and some factory steam engines too. I also have some stationary engine, and machinery sounds aswell. I also record sound effetcs and ambient sounds for film/tv and computer games.

The answer is yes, there are microphones for that sort of thing, Brüel & Kjær comes to mind. Unfortunately their stuff is rather expensive. Moderately priced, but good accuracy, would be something like Earthworks. You may need an inline pad with those products.

On the lower end, a kick drum mic like a Shure Beta 52 or AKG D112 can take absolutely vicious sound pressure levels, but those microphones' frequency, transient, and polar response aren't terribly accurate (they aren't designed to be).

ok thats great thanks xD

I need a good one to use with my Uher Report 4200 tape recorder.
