I know about MIDI Quest but that's quite expensive. Is something else available?

Nope.
Unless you can get Sound Diver working with XP, you're out of luck.
There may be some freeware/shareware programs out there for the JV-1010/XP30, but my experience is that they don't work as well and have the nice UI other more expensive programs have.

Well I guess that simplifies things. 
I downloaded the MIDI Quest demo. The doumentation is pretty bad and it's really easy to crash the program.
