Need a laptop for college, can't decide

I'm looking for a laptop in the $800-1100's range and can't decide. I've found two that I really like but I'm not familiar enough with the really detailed tech specs to pick between the two:

I think basically the deciding factor is the processor. The Vaio has an i5 that gets 2.66 GHz, but the asus has an i7 quad core that gets 2GHz. I'm not sure which is better in this scenario.

The laptop will probably be used for alot of multitasking/downloading and infrequent gaming.

I'm looking for something in the 15"-16" range, with a 1080p full HD and at least 1MB dedicated VRAM. Also a 7200rpm HDD is preferred.
 
Forget about processor power, forget about gaming. In a laptop you want...
  • ...it to be light. Lugging a heavy laptop around gets old quick.
  • ...it to be covered by an excellent, no catch, warranty. Laptops are very fragile.
  • ...it to be covered by theft insurance. Laptops are notorious for growing legs and walking.
If you are going to drop $1,200 on a PC drop $400 on a laptop, and $800 on a desktop. Sync them everyday and when your laptop breaks or walks away with all of your notes, projects, and data... and your laptop WILL break or grow legs... you won't feel like cracking your head open on the sidewalk.
