Nedd Help With Making Recording More Clear

Need Help With Recording Method

Ok, I have a TOA CX-164 Mixer (Old, and also Used) and i have that hooked into the Line In on my computer's sound card which is a Sound Blaster PCI 512 and records at 16 - 44.1khz. The mics i am using are for the drums are 4 SM-57's and a Shure Beta-52 Kick mic. For lead guitar i am hooking the mics cables into the outputs on the back of the head which is a Flextone II 200W (100x2) Stereo Head, it has a mono and right output for mic cables on the back of it. For the bass i am using a direct box and for rhythm guitar i am using a Behringer mic, not sure which one. I record through the computer using Sonic Fountry Sound Forge 6.0, but not sure how to use effects and other things with it to make it sound better. Also i am using a SM-57 to record the vocals. Only problem is do not know how to overdub, so we record all at the same time and that is it. I also need help on mastering the sound after we get done recording. If any one has any tips about a different way of recording, overdubbing, or effects, please reply.

Hey kids, for what your doing it don't sound too bad.

I don't use sound forge but i would imagine you can multi-track with it.

Just keep reading the software instructions until you understand it.

You cannot multitrack with Sound Forge. It's possible to overdub in a sense by merging files together, but it would be very cumbersome. In fact, probably too cumbersome. (I believe it's under the Paste command, called something like Mix Paste, where it blends what's in the clipboard with whatever is already in the track. But you can't hear the first track play while you record a subsequent one.)

You really need a multitrack recording package.

Also, if you want to record everyone playing together, and want to get each instrument on its own track, you would need an audio interface that has more than just a stereo line in like the Sound Blaster and other consumer cards do.
 
Ok, But now how would i be able to overdub

How would i be able to overdub with what i am using, what other programs could i use to do this. Also, could you recommend any cards that i could use or refer me to any sites that could help with overdubbing. Also, i might sound a little stupid fo asking this, but what is multi-tracking and how would i be able to do it with the equipment i have. Also, i have Cool Edit Pro, how would i be able to use this program.

You can do over-dubs in cool edit pro. Go the the multi-track view, you change views on the little picture on the top left corner. Then when you record something onto track 1 (You have to click the little red button to be able to record on a track). De-select the little red button on track 1 and select the red button for track 2. Push record and you can record somethin on track 2 while listening to what was previously recorded on track 1.

I don't know if that exactly makes sense, but if you mess around with cool edit you should be abel to figure it out. As for soundcards, look at some made my M-audio www.m-audio.com I use the Delta 1010 as do many others on this board.

Now, when i do get done recording and overdubbing, an everything, how do i master the songs i have done. What programs would i use to do this.
