Near-Field Monitor Suggestions?

I’m just after suggestions for decent ‘Near-Field Monitors’ as a second reference point to go with my ‘Edirol MA-15D Reference Monitors’ (See Pic!). What have other people done/purchased in the way of second reference monitors? Is it best to have active Near-Field monitors or Amp Powered? Budget is about £250/$460 (Maybe More If Power Amp If Applies). Recording/Mixing broad range of 'Rock' music if that makes a difference :o ? Any advice what so ever would be great! Thanks!

I have a pair of KRK Rokit5's at home and I find them very good, not fatiguing and fairly accurate once you get used to them.

But that 'once you get used to them' goes for all monitors. Wharfedales get good chatter around here and rap/hiphop seems to sound best on Event monitors.

Be sure you're not stuck with something you can't return if they're just not right for your purpose.
 
I have a pair of these Roland DS-5's. The music I play and mix is mostly a form of rock music and these have suited me fine. These are powered. There are more expensive and some people will say a more accurate monitor than these but for my situation and environment these are treating me fine!

My preference is the powered monitor!
 
KRK RP5's are seriously bang for the buck monitors. They are really good for the price.
 
The KRK Rokit5's look ace! The Spec of them seems good and it’s in my price range! Ssscientist & Studiomaster, how have you found they KRK Rockit5’s relate in terms of mix similarity to how the final mix would sound on ordinary stereo/computer speakers?

This may be a stupid question, but when it comes to a second set of monitors, does it matter that the size of the two sets of monitors are similar? I’ve mixed using a set of my monitors and some larger monitors 3-4 times the size before and seen this done in a studio I recorded at once. Does it make a big difference or does it just come down to individual monitor specification?

I have to agree about the KRK's but also check out the Wharfedale 8.2's

That's the crucial test for any monitors, and in my humble opinion the KRK's pass with flying colors.

They're a bit bass-heavy --- surprising considering the small size --- but nothing that you won't soon adapt to.

I've heard it said that the RP5's don't get LOUD, but I don't quite know by whose standards 'LOUD' is measured because they're certainly loud enough for me. Maybe someone who's played metal for 20 years and has lost most of the top end of their hearing would consider them too quiet...
 
Thanks for the help guys! If anyone else has any other suggestions please fire away! Otherwise looks like I might be getting a pair of KRK Rokit5s! Taking your advice Ssscientist, I’ll make sure I can return them if they don’t suit me fine! Just out of interest (though I can afford them) what advantage would the Rokit6 have over the Rokit5? How does the speaker size alter the outcome? Thanks for everyone’s help! Glad I found this forum! :)
 
If you are lookin at the rokits look at m-audio's bx5a monitors. they are generally compared. There are pro's and con's to each i went with bx5a.
 
I have a set of the Edirol MA-10D. I never use them for mixing.
The only use they get is from my kids, they plug there mp3 player into them.

Don't rule out the Behringer Truth's. I just got the B2031p's (passive) and I am very impressed with them.
 
Badgerstudios, the RP5's were phenomenal for rock music. Soft rock sounded sweet on these monitors; as well as other genres.

For secondary monitors, I would prefer something with a bigger/smaller LF woofer, so that you get to hear how the audio translates to speakers that has a different frequency response.

I have a set of Samson Resolv 80A powered mid-field monitors. Last I checked they were something like $400.
Samson is looked down on by some folks, but I found that they really are both analytical and nicely balanced in sound. Just another horse for your race... :)
