ill start off by tellin you my equiptment. nothin fancy- roland micro monitors, behringer eurorack, sm57, and standard PC with factory soundcard.

there's a lot of nasty hissing and bleeping comin out of my monitors and it shows up in my recordings. i thought i could live with it, but it's just way too frustrating. i'm assuming it's just because i have a cheap soundcard.

so my question is- is there anything i can do to remedy this? or do i need to just shell out and get a nicer soundcard? if so, what cards do you suggest?

and one more stupid question. i'm really bad with technical stuff. is a soundcard easy to install myself? or do i need to have a computer guy do it.

i would greatly appreciate any help. thank you.

Hi Spock,

First of all, how are you recording your music? Could be the cable? Most hissing/crackling etc is down to the cable, so you might want to try another one before you shell out on another sound card.

If you do decide to get a new soundcard, we cant really suggest any until we know your budget, how many tracks you need, what youll be recording etc. If your purchased a PCI sound card, this would involve opening up your pc and slotting it into a free PCI slot. This isnt too difficult, but i know a friend who damaged his graphics card when doing his..so i cant say its fool proof. Alternatively, you could purchase either a USB or firewire soundcard which is basically plug'n'play.

Answer some of the questions above and we might be able to help you a little more :)

my budget is $200-$300 or less. i record bass, keyboard and guitar, but i do them all one at a time, so i dont need multiple tracks. i have a mixer so i'm good there. all i would want in a soundcard is something that had good, clean sound. no blips, no hissing.

thanks, hope that clears some things up.

You SHOULD get a good soundcard... the good news is you can get one for less than $100! :)

Check out the Audiophile2496 or EMU0404.

Onboard soundcards are made with a 20-cent chip made for beeps and boops, not music production.

Leeking is right; spend $100 and get a 24-bit soundcard.

If you can afford a soundcard, then go for it, but i was trying to find out where the hissing was coming from. Even a stock soundcard shouldn't make hissing sounds etc when its being recorded from.

But yeah, if you can afford another soundcard, go for it!

Good luck!
