Nasty Feedback During Pro Tools Recording

I'm using Pro Tools LE 8.0 with the Mbox2 Mini.
My laptop specs are:
Compaq Presario CQ60
AMD Athlon Dual Core QL-62 2.0 GHz
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS
2.0 Gb RAM

I have my acoustic/electric guitar plugged directly into input to on the Mbox and when I begin recording there is some nasty buzzes and clicks with each note I play. I have a set of typical earbuds plugged into the headphone jack on the front of the Mbox. I'm also saving everything to my internal hard drive at the moment until I pick up an external hard drive. Anybody have any answers as to why it's doing this? (guitar cables, headphones, sound volumes, hard drive, etc.)

Are the sounds happening live via the monitoring, or do you only hear them on playback?

Silly question, but not really... but have you restarted your computer to see if that helps?

IF it's the same noise/clicks/pops that I've experienced, I can either power cycle my interface and reboot the software, or reboot the entire computer and it goes away.

I don't know what causes it.. but it happens. When there is input signal, it just sounds way distorted and noisy... I wish it wouldn't happen but luckily all it is fixed with a reboot.

Both. I hear it while I'm recording and during playback.

I'm no expert on the Mbox units, but I believe they offer zero-latency monitoring, which means that if you're hearing it through that path the noise is happening before the converters. Are you using the zero-latency monitoring of the Mbox or monitoring your inputs through Pro Tools?

If the bad sounds are happening before the converters then they have nothing to do with the computer or software. The problem is at the input of the system. M-Audio claims instrument inputs for the Mini, but maybe they aren't dealing with your particular guitar pickup too well.

Try austinm08's reboot suggestion, adjusting buffers etc. If that doesn't fix it you may want to get an active direct box.

Yeah, that is something to take into consideration.. and Tman311, if you don't know what boulder is talking about, it's the "mix" knob on the Mbox (well my Mbox 2 had one, anyway). It attenuates the mix between "pre-Pro Tools"/zero latency and "post-Pro Tools"/latency monitoring.

Alright so I guess what you guys are saying my volume levels for input, mix, and guitar need to be adjusted. And if I'm getting it right I should keep the mix knob relatively low to weaken the signal coming from the guitar. I'll play around with the levels and see what I can come up with. Please tell me if I am completely off and sounding like a noob lol Thanks for the help guys I am learning alot!
