Hey Vease, you took the words right out of my mouth. During this period, everyone I knew was into Zep, Hendrix, Humble Pie, Stones, etc.

Hey Pete!!

Sorry didn't know about Midnight Oil, wish we heard more about them in the States...

Joe Jackson is still around, too.
He's on tour and coming to Chicago in the next few weeks.

That's good to know about Mr Jackson: his "Jumpin' Jive" album is one of the alltime greats.

Vease,

Point taken. I tend to think of obscure bands as being those that made no real impact over time. Weather Report and John McLaughlin might be obscure by the standards of Britney Spears/Kenny G-level music enthusiasts, but they were pretty huge in their day (well, not Led Zeppelin-huge or Who-huge, but way huge for anything with the word "jazz" associated with it) and they were very influential, an influence that's very strong to this day, whether it's often pointed out and acknowledged or not. That didn't fit my notion of obscure. However, the Webster's online dictionary defines the word in this sense to mean just "relatively unknown; not prominent or famous," so I guess thay are pretty obscure after all.

I just have to come here once a month to marvel at this post. ;-]

Did I ever email you thanking you for that CD?

Man, I wish I could play blues like that.

I just thought of one from the seventies.......Flash in the Pan. They were kind of pre-techno. Very unusual sound at the time. Back then I hated it cause it wasn't rock 'n' roll, but now I think it was kind of cool. Funny how tastes change with time.

Well, thank you Wes! Of course, you're in the wrong thread -- I'll confess to being "old" and "obscure" but I sure ain't no "band!"
Thanks
John

(2) Till Tuesday
(3) Plastic Ono Band

Obscure?

No offense guys (& gals) but most of those bands mentioned may be 'old' but they're hardly 'obscure'. Most of the bands named above are VERY mainstream, (except Budgie... good one!). True, most kids under 18 would never have heard of them, but that's just a sign of the pale, shallow, disposable culture we live in, and of how culturally ignorant our kids are.

Here's obscure:
Gary Myrick and the Figures.

Who can name what city he came from, and what was his one big hit?

culturally ignorant? do you know all the popular groups of now? well i don't but the point is to not know bands like metal church (i keep laughing :D) is in my eyes hardly culturally ignorant.

Sure, Ok.

I don't know a lot about contemporary bands, so I guess I'm culturally ignorant.

As with anything, cultural or otherwise, there will always be stand-out performers, in every era, who will rise to the top and make a statement, and be noticed, or noted in history, and a lot of others that are just 'chaff' and will fall by the wayside.

My main point was that most of the names on the list above are -hardly- obscure. They're very mainstream. The other comment related to the statement above ...'that most kids of today would never have heard of'... (paraphrasing).

Its hard to name truly obsure bands because no one will know who you are talking about. If they cut tracks and received air play then you can say they are not really obscure? What is obscure?
