just as the topic says. my cousin has about $600 to spend on a card... i can get him a hook up on most things so name them. it has to work with Win2000 and or XPPro.

Hard to go wrong with M-Audio Delta Series. Good converters and good drivers. I get less than 2ms latency.

Delta(M-Audio) cards are great as well as Aardvark....Echo makes good stuff too.....

what's the goal?

With a $600 budget you have A LOT of options. I'm sure Gidge or other regulars could make more specific recommendations if you let us know what your cousin would want to do with the card.

If you have an external mixer, you can get a Echo Mia for $200. It has the same converters as the high-end Echo cards, but it has less I/O (and paying more for additional I/O might not be worth it if you have an external mixer.) On the other hand, many people like to get an audio card that "does it all". You *might* be able to get a year-end bargain on a Digi card for around $600 which give you more I/O and hardware multitracking (better hurry!)

Without knowing your specific desires, I'm inclined to say get the Mia, and if you need to, get an external mic preamp/mixer/whatever. You can do multitracking in software with n-track and put the rest of your money into instruments or beer.

Has echo improved any? everyone I know who bought said they were real picky about what motherboards/proccessor they would work with. In fact I know two people who bought layla's who wound up having to sell them because they couldnt ever get them to work right.

The delta 1010 seems to work just fine for me.

I got RME, and I think it is one of the best for PC, but you need an external converter (which, surprisingly, is actually a feature cause you end up with better, noise - free audio).

Bdgr,

I was expriencing some "crackling" with my Mia when I moved the virtual sliders, so based on what I was reading on the board I went and got a Delta card. What ensued was aweful, and horrible, and indescribable without going on a HUGE rant. To keep it short let me just say this as a warning to anyone who might have a Sony Viao PCV-RX465DS -- Do Not put a Delta card in your Viao.

My PC has been fubar since I installed the Delta drivers. I've completely re-installed the OS (trying ME, 2K, XP) and no matter what I do, the internal fan constantly runs at peak capacity now (which produces a crap-load of white-noise.) I'm waiting for a shipping box so I can send it back to Sony for them to look at. An other thing, is that my PC resording software is also picking up a large amount of white-noise. Argh -- I didn't want to get into this, heheh.

Let me just say that if I'd have stayed with the Mia in the first place I'd be exceptionally happy right now, but as it stands, I'm not sure I'll ever get this PC working quite right again. For those that like their Delta that's great, but the Mia seems fine to me (and it has XP drivers now too).

sence delta1010's are only $490 he might pick one of them up.i can get a Q10 for under $600 and the Rme multiface for $700

You ask for best I know of, and then name a price that is 1/3 of that... :)
Motu 1296 if you want the best soundcard available right now.
The 1224 is twice $600, but very nice.
In your range, THe delta 1010, but alas, no sexy meters. :(

dude, if you can get the Q10 for under $600, that would be sweet....it comes with 8 nice preamps....you are limited to a 48khz sampling rate, but if that isnt an issue, its the one......

ok price doesn't matter because he's not gonna pay regular price for it. i found out i can get a delta 1010 for $400 so he might get one of them for sure. so price isn't an option...now whats the BEST...other than RME and the System III?

WHERE?... You guys quote these prices but no links or names???

C'mon man. I want to know.

Aardvark

I would go with the Q10 if I were you. It is a nice sound card. I have a Direct Pro 24/96 and I am very pleased with it. Plus new drivers just came out for XP and 2000.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by Multi-face?
It's actually 2 cards, one that plugs into your PCI slot, and the other has a cable that connects to the main sound card.
Together they have 3 ADAT optical connections (8 channels each), One S/PDIF digital I/O, 1 ADAT Sync in, and one Word Clock I/O (BNC). The card, and its expansion card is around $700.
The way I have it set up is the first 8 channels go to my board (a Yamaha O1V) and the second 8 channels go to my 8 I/O ( an A/D-D/A converter) I guess if I wanted to take advantage of the other 8 channel inputs, I'd have to get another 8 I/O A/D-D/A converter. But 16 channels gives me control of up 200 tracks, so, unless I was doing session recording, the additional 8 in's and out's are just icing! The A/D-D/A converter I have cost around $1700.00; for now, I'd rather put that money into some more choice mics! ;)

It's actually this one, made for Nuendo by RME. The driver is not the hammerfall though. I just refer to it as the RME because thats the one everyone is familiar with.
