I'm thinking of getting one of the Nady/Shiny box/T-bone ribbons. Has anyone tried using one of these mics in a M-S stereo setup? I've heard reviews that seemed to suggest that the front versus back response was not the same, or it had an asymetrical figure eight pattern. Any experiences would be appreciated.

I had a friend come over and we used one as a mono drum mic. Great mic! But...yeah, not a symetrical figure 8.

Is it a matter of the back sounding different from the from the front side tonally, or that the mic doesn't pick up equal amplitude from both sides? Damn, too bad, I was looking forward to trying out M-S in person finally. :o

I think it might be both...but definitely at least less volume from the back side.

Good question. I've been eyeing one of the ShinyBox 46's myself. You could Email the guy at ShinyBox and ask - he replied to some of my questions really fast - then you could post his response in this thread for the rest of us to see.

If you weren't set on a ribbon mic, you could try a CAD M179. It has a continuously variable pickup pattern, so you could use the Figure of 8 for the MS configuration.

I'm currently using a Studio Projects B3 ($159) for the figure eight mic in my M-S setup, along with a B1, with great results.
