I`m an allmost new recruit to the home recording army out there. I`ve been using Cakewalk on a SoundBlaster live card for some time with mixed results ( no pun intended ). I am now going to spend some money on a mixer, miks & keyboard. Up `till now I`ve just used my guitar plugged direct to the card and the midi functions of the card with a Sony portable stereo for monitoring/playback. I don`t want to spend too much money right ou so I am wondering if my Nad310 and Mordaunt Short MS05i`s will work as studio monitors. The Nad has a tone defeat switch. Any help greatly appreciated.

The Nad should be adequate for starters, used with 'tone defeat', otherwise you'll be 'defeating the objective'. A word of warning though - be very careful not to overload the input to the amplifier, or you could have problems - big problems.
Likewise, the MS speakers should be adequate for your present needs. you don't need anything which will 'blow your head off' !!
Personally, I use a Cloud Electronics CV250 slave amplifier, feeding a pair of Rogers LS2a loudspeakers, and have done for years.
The input to the amplifier comes straight from the mixing console (Behringer MX9000), the sound is probably as neutral as you can get, without spending a fortune.
The only other advice I can offer, is to talk to people with a similar interest. It's amazing how much information you can pick up for free.

the MS and NAD should do fine... in fact IMO better than similarly priced "pro monitors" both companies are known for economical high quality hi-fi... and with the possible caveate of the MS not being sheilded and your using a crt monitor(screen... does anyone use them any more????)you should have no problems and reasonably accurate sound... good choice...
