Mysterious 'pop' ???

I'm getting a strange pop (or click :P) on tracks that I record. I'm using a Delta 66 with Vegas Pro. I'm using cheap mics, but they both do it, so its prolly not them. Any hints where to search for this evil sound?

Does this happen when you have one track or a number of tracks, Or just all the time. Do you have a fast enough transfer rate on your harddrive ? A friend of mine had that problem. He would record so many tracks 8-9 and you would here this pop or break in the audio.
Just a blind guess. I don't know.

It's only happened when recording two tracks at the same time. How do I check my HD transfer rate?

Well I think you need to know how your harddrive is connected. I think that would give you a good idea right off the bat. Your harddrive could be IDE, or SCSI, ETC. I don't know a whole lot about this subject, It could be something else. But hopefully someone with some knowledge in this will help us out here.

I'll bet pglewis or TrackRat would know. ;)
 
The first thing that comes to mind from the description is that the combined signal might be peaking on playback even though neither signal individually does. Does it only happen during the loudest portions of the tracks? If you have two tracks with the exact same signal (and set to the exact same playback volume), the combined signal level will be a whopping 6dB louder (twice as loud) as just one track by itself. If the two signals are different, the increase will be somewhere from 3dB to 6db, depending on the sources. Try turning both tracks down on playback and see if it goes away.

There's so many thing that can cause pops and clicks, though. How frequently does it happen (every few seconds, constantly, once or twice in the recording)? Do the clicks and pops coincide with the loud parts of the material (i.e., are you just peaking)? Is your AC/refrigerator/something else kicking on and sending a spike through your system while you're recording? Bad channel on a pre-amp, mixer, soundcard? Lots of things to check.
 
Yah, with my friends this only happened on playback, randomly some times two quick pops in a row, through out the recording. But that damned pop haunts my head at night. It's almost like when a cd skips. But most of the time the computer would warn you "Harddrive too slow for playback" before it would let you play it back, but not if you where right on the limit. This is probably something different though. Like pglewis said it could be anything.

I think its probobly my power supply, as you suggest, PG. I think this because I just turned on a fan across the room and heard a 'click' through my amp, which happened to be on (its even plugged into a totally different outlet). I don't think its a bad pre-amp, as its happens through both my tube pre-amps. The sound card is a new Delta66... hope that isn't it.

What can you suggest to do about the power supply?

If it's an occasional power spike, you're out of my jurisdiction :(. I'm not very knowlegable in that area, but I know a lot of folks around here are.

Again, is it happening only once or twice in the recording, every few seconds, all the time? That might help a little to narrow the source down.
 
Happenstance*...Go to www.winmag.com and do the wintune test to find out your transfer rate and all sorts of stuff about your computer.
