Mysterious memory increase (>1GB!)

I have a strange problem here. Well actually I have two problems, but I don't know if they are related to each other. But first things first:

Problem No 1:
I am loading a project that contains audio data and close it. After that I load another project (also with audio data) and close it. If I do this more than 6 or 7 times the memory usage SUDDENLY increases to over 1GB(!). Before that it is always less than 200MB. I tried this several times and it always happened when loading the seventh project. It doesn't matter which projects I load and in waht order, as long as they contain audio data. No problems with pure MIDI projects.

I wonder if this is related to my poor audio hardware (AC'97 onboard sound) or if this is a problem in Cubase. On a different computer I cannot produce this behaviour, so I think this is hardware related. Any ideas?

Problem No 2:
This might also be related to my poor audio hardware. Sometimes the drum tracks have drop outs. This happens on basic drum tracks although I have a very powerful machine (AMD 1800+, 512MB RAM).

This is my setup:
WinXP, on an AMD 1800+ CPU with 512MB RAM, onboard sound AC'97

Thanx for your help!

ooops, I forgot to mention that I'm using Cubase SX 2.0 ;-)

Regarding the dropouts on the drum tracks: this is of course MIDI. The MIDI notes are played either over the Microsoft GS SW Synth or the Microsoft MIDI Mapper. That's why I think that the droupouts are related to the onboard soundcard (the SW Synth uses the audio card, right?).

This might help, but might my brother (computer programmer) scan-read your post and mentioned 'memory loops'.

You could do a search for that on google perhaps?
