yes i read all the previous post about digital hard disk recorders and they were really informative. this site is the BOMB

ok - enough brown.nosing......

i have so many questions i dont kno where to start.

1st off a little about me - i have an old korg sampling keyboard and an analog 4 track. im ready finally to make the jump to digital recording. i dont want to really incorporate a pc right now - i just want a decent digital track machine.

im kind of leaning towards the boss 1180 'cuz it seems they make good products. i was really liking the zoom 1266 too but i was hearing that zooms products were cheap, and come to think of it im not crazy about my rhythm trak drum machine.

anyway i guess my question is for one is that boss 1180 really a ten track device? by that i mean can i actually record my own audio on ALL ten tracks or are the built in drum and bass track inaccessable?

i make hip hop oriented stuff - strictly sampling for the most part. any suggestions for other recorders i should look at let me know....also i only want to spend about $1000.oo.........

BR 1180

Hey I'm really new to this forum, in fact this is my first post. Regardless I own the BR 1180 and their is a Yahoo group of several hundred members dedicated to the 1180 as well.

I can answer some of your questions although I'm sure other more knowledgeable members can contribute as well.

The 1180 does have 10 tracks but only 8 are useful. The idea being that you record on the dedicated 8 tracks and bounce/master to the last 9/10 stereo track. Basically if you track on all 10 then their is no way to master your song.

The built in drum machine is not too bad, but the good thing is that it does not take up a track at all so you can record 8 tracks and still have the drums seperate for when you bounce/master your track.

Their is no built in bass though.

A couple of things to consider. It is designed for the songwriter because even though you have 8 tracks and quite an arsenal of different (useable) effects you can only record two tracks at a time. Limits it's use when you have multiple musicians unless you use a mixer and mix them into two tracks.

The second thing is make sure you get the one with the CD burner, it is so useful. I'm extremely happy with mine, but the group at Yahoo seem to be the experts and know the unit inside and out. The website is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/br1180/

Good luck with your decision.

thanx

that was helpfull - im going to ck that site out.

only two tracks at a time huh? that shouldnt be a problem - but how many mic inputs does it have?

already over my head

uh - over my head - as far as the mic inputs. whats the difference?

and does that mean i need two seperate type of mics if i want two vocals recording on different tracks at the same time?

and another question...

if anyone knows anything about the Yamaha AW16G please let me know.

i am considering that too but i dont know how it matches up to the boss quality wise. its almost twice the tracks but roughly the same price - why? and would it be usefull for the type of stuff i want to make?

i read the specs online but i cant really make practical sense out of the specs.....thanks
