LI Slim: The Vegas Meters are the meters in Sonic Foundry's Vegas Pro. The values above 0 aren't real, they're there as a convenience to let you know how much you've gotta back off when you try again.

Thanks, Doc.

Since I have N-track, and not Sonic Foundry V.P., is there any other way I can get "readings" on that. It sounds like it would be useful...

never mind......

Doc, I just figured out the answer to my last question. N-track has a setting called "playback vu-meter anticipates the output", which causes the playback vu-meter to graphically show the levels above 0 dB instead of showing "clip".

Does Soundforge do that???? I've been looking but can't find it.

I have no problem in being corrected. When I'm not very sure of what I say, I only answer if nobody else have given an answer, and I point out that I'm not sure. If you look at my posts here you will find some of those.
Sometimes I may leave out a bit of technical detail that I find only will make matters more confusing, and I do often leave out the obvious. Then you come picking on me, claiming I am wrong, when I'm not, and in the process giving out bad advice. THAT'S what I have a problem with.

As an example of obvious detail I have left out is that yes, one microphone put to good use may sound better that four mics put to BAD use when recording a drum. Thats obvious, Ed, and I didn't feel the need to write that. But you come pouncing on this, straight away! Why? What was your point with that, unless you were looking for some kind of way to claim that I was wrong?

As to the equipment that you have used that will not allow you to reach digital full scale while recording

Excuse me? I have NEVER claimed I have used any such equipment.

I can guarantee you that it is possible to reach 0dB on those meters while recording and not have clipping.

Sure. This is not the issue here. The issue is if you KNOW if you are just exactly touching full scale or if you are clipping. You yourself write "The converter has no way of knowing that anything above that voltage value is in fact more voltage or not". I must be unclear in the extreme, or you just simply do not want to understand what I'm saying, even when I'm repeating what you are saying...
