quick pic of my place almost done. Its a ltiitle demo studio that I charge $20.00 per hour

Wow! Big Board. Cool Stuff. It looks good to me man, FWIW. You know, but yeah, post some more pictures, like of the live room and stuff, when you're done with it that is. Thanks for sharing.

That is one serious console. Very cool.

kit like that for $20 an hour???!!!!

There's kids out there with Cubase and an audiophile for that price!

cheapcheapcheap.. I wish I lived in NY so I could rent it :(

Must feel great to have all that stuff

Nice Studio

I think the comments (about cheap!)speak for themselves. I have a very similar setup (except for the console - Is that a tascam or peavey?). My rate is $75 per hour. I used to get $45 in my basement with a soundcraft 200B 16ch. Must be a tough market where you are, but it seems that Rochester has a lot of first rate, high price studios. It might be what you have to do to get your reputation out there. Good luck!<p> Here's mine: http://chemistryrecording.com

Thanks everyone!!

The console I bought from John Kay of Steppenwolf. It is from his personal studio. He did his latest solo CD on it and the last 2 Steppenwolf CD also. I found it on a web site of the guy that is his keyboard and drum tech. I've had it 2 years. I went from NY to Mass to pick it up from the band that brought it up on one of there tour trucks. It works really well for me. I should be ready for business Feb 20th. If interested, you can go to my site at www.jolexrecording.com and listen to MP.3 samples. They are ones I did at my house with the console. I have not done anything in the new place yet!!! But soon!! Thanks,Jim

Singking Very cool

Nice!! The thing is here in Rochester there is not a lot of studio like mine. There are a lot of guys in there basements charging $30.00-$55.00 per hour. So my place with its big room, drum booth and vocal booth, nice gear should do well. I charge only $20.00 per hour because I have a real nice full time job. I do this for fun. Yeah,I hope to make money. My rent is cheap,$350.00 per month. If I get rolling and I'm all booked up for time then I'd like to go to $30.00 per hour. My ideal situation is get to $30.00 per hour and hire an engineer at $12.00 - $15.00 per hour and just sit back and watch!! It may happen!...I hope! Singking, how do you like the HD 24?? My board is a Peavey Production series 2400. Very good for spottiong that!!! Most dont know.

There's a guy on eBay right now in Canada selling a Peavey SRC 2400 console with flight case. It has 6 hours remaining and currently is about US $380 if anyone's interested. He also has a Soundcraft Spirit Studio 24 channel board going for about US $1025 right now. Don't know anything about either one of these boards except I think the SRC 2400 is a FOH board, just thought someone might be interested.

HD24

I like the HD24 very much. It seems to be very flexible. I have only had it a few months and haven't really used all the editing features yet. Still figuring out the punch in. I previously used Vestax HDs which only allowed 6 to 8 tracks per machine - same principal. Having a 24 Track on one unit is great.

As for the Peavey I am kinda a console buff - looking mostly at ones I would like to have someday. I'm not sure how the eqs are on your Peavey, but it must be better than the Mackies. I don't want to start an argument on this site, but I would rather have a british eq anyday - I think a lot of folks would agree if they had a chance to use one - souncraft was my first experience, now I even use a soundcraft live - my studio console is a Soundtracs 32 x 8 it is also a british board and my recordings are really good.

Good luck in your venture - I also have a great full time job and the income from the studio is not an issue, but with the equipment that you have, don't sell yourself short!

kill the market??

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I'm guessing you mean dont be too cheap and drive everyones price way down??? Yes, I see your point. Mainly I guess I dont think I'm worth more than that in a way. I'm very much self taught. I think I have a good ear and deliver a good product but as I said before in a few threads ago,go to my sight and listen. You would be doing me a favor . Listen to the MP.3 clips and give me your opinion. Maybe I should be up to $30.00 per hour?? www.jolexrecording.com

Yes that's what I meant. Take no offense, there was no sarcasm or agressivity in my post. I meant just be careful not to lower your rates too much to the point that everyone else in your league has to do it too. The danger I feel is what's gonna happen once you want to raise your rates?
Just my opinion.

Rage, Oh No, I did not take offence at all. As I said I think I understand what you are saying. People that know me/my studio tell me its too cheap. People also may think "ya get what ya pay fer". I am afraid of that but I think I'll ride with the $20.00 per hour for a year then re think my price if business is good. Believe me, I understand what you are saying . You may very well be right. We shall have to see!!!! At least.....I "hope" to be able to raise my price later!!! Jim

I've learned something

In the past few years doing the recording thing,I've learned that sometimes its better to walk away. I'm involved in "talks" with a gospel group presently. They are very good,BUT!!! there is something about them.......they seem to be sort of testing me on a few matters. Now I'm the lowest in town. They have done a lot of recording over many years. I have to ask me..why me and my studio?? I think I'm finding out. I finally emailed them today and said I could not do the "task" that they wished which consited of trying to fix a live recording by mastering it. It was a poor recording. There manager said he would base his desision on using my studio with the outcome of the job I did on there recording. This is for free understand! After listening to it, I decided no. I've been involved with this type before....no way to please them. Just a word to the wise. Of course, I'm a slow learner..you guys probably already know that!! Jim

Jim, that's a fine looking studio you have, and i agree with others, you should probably charge more. If it were my studio, I'd charge $20 p/hour just to walk in and see it. My little studio is nice but small, and I'm getting $20 p/hr. I hope to one day have a studio so nice..

Have fun.

Terry

REALLY!

You guys may be right. Do me a favor and go to my site and listen to some samples and see if I suck.I get so I cant tell!! www.jolexrecording.com. Mayby I should up the anti!!!!

Damn :)

I cant wait for me and my wife tou buy a house Hopefully we will be ready in a year, I cant wait to start building my dream home studio :) Real Nice set-up man

Always set your rate high, or similar to what your competition charges.
You can always come down in price if a client requests it, but you can't go up.
Believe me, if you charge a cheap rate, people WILL take advantage of it.

I was looking around for the board you have. Just curious about its specs and all but I am unable to find anything about it. Where did you purchase it from?
