My Studio 8 ..

Arrived, safely, yesterday, from Toronto, and, luckily, since it wasn't packed
ultra-well; but adequate, arrived unscathed and in better condition than
the photos revealed(cosmetically-speaking).

In fact, it looks great, so it was apparently well taken care of.

Everything's functioning(thank god!) which could've been a real crapshoot,
as I know everyone doesn't get lucky with these. I'm hoping she'll serve
me well for a few years, and plan on taking good care of her to insure that.

I paid $305.00+$95.00 to have it shipped; a very cool deal, I'd say

It even came with 4-5 rolls of unused 499 to get me started . :)

The manual wasn't mentioned in the auction, but I was *VERY* pleased when
it arrived along with the machine !! So, now I have the schematics needed
for servicing and troubleshooting(not by me  ) .

Rather than use all 8 tracks, all of the time, I may double prominent tracks
to get a bigger sound and maybe save single tracks for secondary parts,
like a synth cello line, for example. Depends on the song, of course.

Ex : Doubletrack vocals guitar and drums and leave 2 singles for other parts.

Or for simpler arrangements double track all 4 for a bigger sound from the 388

I'm tempted to get a 2nd one but probably wouldn't get as lucky as I got
this time, what with the horror stories I read here from new 388 owners.

Say a prayer that my baby lasts a while .

Congrats on your 388 score! Its a great machine and a Hoot to use.
I spent all day yesterday with mine and just fell more in love with it.
I have 3 of them now 2 that work great and one that is a basket case for now and hope to get it going in the future.

Thanks Herm :)

Do you rotate your use of the _2 good ones_ just to make sure that they
stay operational, or is it really a matter of :

" If something goes wrong it just will.. " ?

Is it OK to have a good spare just *sitting in storage* ?

... just wondering .

Glad I found this forum and you guys specifically!! I just got a 388 myself, but unfortunately, it is not working. It was free (though it cost a pretty penny to have shipped to me), and all I got from the previous owner is that the transport control is broken........

First off, can anyone help me out with a copy of the manual? Where can I obtain one? Secondly, any info on diagnosing whats wrong with the unit? One of the posts above mentions some of these having problems....is this (nothing happens when push play, rewind, fast forward) a problem that is commonly seen? Easily fixed?

I'm really excited about this unit, can someone help me PLEASE!!!

My friend,...

Your basic description leads me to believe that there's a blown fuse, first,... but not necessarily limited to that. I have a hunch it's something simple. Pls see my other post, for other tips.

I have [4] 388's, all in perfect working order. It's one of my favorite recorders, and definitely the king of "Portastudios".

LONG LIVE THE KING!;)

Ps:...

Ohm the fuses out properly, as I've seen fuses break physically from jostling around, that did not show any obvious signs of being "blown".

A word to the wise,...
(is not necessary).;)

You can never be to good looking, have to much money or have to many tascam 388,s :) ex wife,s now thats a differant story

Bummer!! The manual on Ebay went fast; by the time I read you post and clicked the Ebay link...the manual was sold!! Thanks for the effort though and thanks for the Tascam parts order phone number.
