G-man - thank you for the writing compliments. Thanks for the recording and mixing pointers too. Why don't people know about Steve McQueen? I'm glad you do. I think some of the posters on this board need to go out to Blockbuster this weekend and rent Bullit. :D

erichenry - appreciate your followup. I think I'm going to come back to it sometime and probably retrack everything except the harmonies. It seems like people think the song is good, but there are still recording and mixing issues standing in the way of making it a strong overall piece of music. I want to get to the point where everything is top notch and then get some real drums worked in. And I'll be knocking on your (virtual) door. Thanks friend.

Lt. Bob - glad you liked the song. I'll keep working at better production. Thanks for the pointers.

participant - I haven't hit the link yet but I will. Thanks for your help.

Sluice - you drive home the impression that the writing is good, but the production is not. I'm glad that at least you think the song is worth working on. Thanks for the pointers. I plan to eventually come back to it as I get more experience.

As for the uncool comment... It was intended as good-natured humor. If anyone took it as anything else, I apologize.

Great song! Kinda sounds like it has tunnel vision. :D

GREAT Harmonies! You are suffering from the drumdums like I am.

Actually my comments on production are no different than what's been said methinks. It's very good...it's just some parts of it sound better than others, ie. drums could be stronger, even for fakies. Which brings me to the "uncool" comment :) It was a joke...and I doubt very much that you have offended anyone. I have been assaulted on numerous occasions by the drum Nazis, and so has Sam...it's all good fun ;)

Whew! I thought I pissed a good man off.

P.S., I view myself as a harmony nazi and am proud of it.

I guess I took your comments on production as a bit more negative than you perhaps expressed them. So maybe I should feel a little better than I did originally. I just have this feeling that I'll come back to the song and retrack everything. :(

Thanks Sluice.

Hell ya! I'm completely re-recording about 3 or 4 songs over the next couple months. It's what learning this stuff is all about to me. Spill the ideas and then go back much later with fresh, more experienced ears (and maybe better gear) and perfect them! I listened to your song before work this morning because I just couldn't wait to hear what you did. The brevity of my post probably made it sound negative, but after the song, I only had a few minutes to comment. I still stand by what I said, but in no way is it bad! I especially like the vocal delivery.

(edit) And if you are a harmony Nazi, please stay out my threads  I have much to practice in that department!

.........not to distract from this fine song.......

.......but the Steve McQueen thing is bummin me out......:( :D

...... for those of you too young to know who the man was......

fender - thanks for the listen and compliments. I also caught your comments on my christmas song. Since I figured you'd comment on this song too and since I didn't want to create an annoyance bump, I thought I'd wait for you to show up here. I always appreciate your comments. Keep them coming.

G-man - don't let the whipper-snappers around here get to you. :D:D:D Cool pic of the man.

sluice - Laughed at your last post. Yep all in good fun. It's turning into a halfway decent thread isn't it?

I think I'm going to work on a couple more projects to keep practicing my skills and then come back to this one and retrack it.

participant hooked me up with a DX plugin to help with drums. Not exactly sure how it works, but I'm going to give it a spin. I downloaded a 14 day trial. I may try to play with that this weekend and see what kind of drums I can put on it.

Cool cool song. You know, there's a whole movie dedicated to this theme (Steve M)...it's called "The Tau Of Steve," and it's definitely worth checking out now that you've recorded the song that should have been the soundtrack for that flick.

This next comment will not be helpful at all, but it's honest. There's something about your mixes that sounds "thin." Now, I'm listening to all the parts, and I can make them out okay...so it's something I can't really put my finger on. Part of it may be the stratosphere-like range you sing (very well) in, and part of it may be the thinnish snare...but I think it's something more. Like something that could be fixed with some type of overall "plugin" to the final mix. I shouldn't even post this, b/c I really don't have a clue how to address it. Some of my mixes come out this way when I've beaten them to death with EQ, but I don't think that's it. Maybe a mic issue. God, I'm rambling. I just wanted you to know that I have the same issues, and I don't know how to "fix" it. I just got some new monitors, and I played your tune next to a commercial cut, and it just comes off sounding less "full," almost like too much high end, but maybe not??? LOL...I'll shut up now.

chris - I remember that movie, but probably because my name is Steve too. But I never saw it.

The thinness comment is great. It sort of dovetails from participant's comments (maybe the ones he sent me in PM). I'm wondering if I'm not recording things hot enough. Do you think it applies to vocals, or guitars too? I'm going to try improve there. Thanks for a great tip. If you find a fix for it please PM me :D

P.S., I see a paper clip icon on the thread title. I've never seen that before. Anybody know what that indicates?

It means the thread has been marked by Dragon for elimination in 2 hours.

GOOD LUCK!!!

just indicates there's an attachment to this thread...ie, the Steve pic

See, the reason I think it might be something that can be fixed with some kind of mastering is that it DOESN'T seem to apply to just the vocals or guitars. I sure haven't found the magic plugin for me, though. I'd listen to Participant if I were you...because I DO listen to him. I didn't wanna' give the impression that the mix sucks, because it doesn't at all...it's just that "thing" that seems to seperate a recording from "good" to "pro." I'm a billion miles away from "pro,"...so I'll keep listening to Chad.

Good Luck,
Chris

Great upbeat tune. It does sound 60'ish, that's very tough to do. Hats off to you.

One thing though, it sounds like some weird out of phase thing going on with the mix. Did you use any stereo enhancer stuff? Might be the mp3 or this Becks, either case groovy tune!

hey Guernica, I'm glad you put up that picture..

I still have no idea who he is..

BTW - 31 :D

You gotta see Papillon BlackSabbath, great movie. Guillotines, lots of misery and death. Dustin Hoffman is in it as well, great actors.

The only time I eva heard of Steve McQueen is from Cheech and Chong when they drive into the drive in with the guys in the trunk and they're lookin for a parkin spot and cheech guns it and pulls into the spot as chong says 'Wow,man! You drive just like Steve McQueen' I always laught at that part even though I didn't totally get the joke, and they say pot is bad?I'm grinnin now....anyway extremely catchy tune w'/ definite production probs,I don't know enough to be specific but the term muddy comes to mine.I really dig your voice reminds me of 'Wheatus' you know " ... I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby...'this tune is Groovy Baby, and the lyrics crack me up,I never got it in highschool either...come to think of it ,I'm still not gettin it.....shit.
