I was so angry yesterday when, setting up my new mic on its boom stand, I failed to consider th effects of balast, and the damn thing went crashing into the cement floor. Now, it still records, but I have no idea if it is recording properly, because I didn't have a chance to hear it before it fell. I'm just wondering if the thing would be able to take a hit like that and still work fine, and if there is any way to check, or fix it. I know it is supposed to be able to stand up to some hits, but I don't know if this one was too much...

So pissed!

I'm guessing you ment the effects of "balance"? :)

I had one that the windscreen/cover came off of.....I'm guessing by being dropped, who knows, but I compared it to a known "good one" and it sounded different. It had more midrange, and no where near the highs and lows that the good one had.

I'm guessing the best way to tell would be to go down to your local music store and test it against a new one. ??

the sm57 is without a doubt one of the most durable pieces of equipment ever made. after a nuclear war, the only things around will be cockroaches and SM57s. As long as the physical structure of the mic is ok it's a safe bet to say it's still sounding like it was intended to sound.

Unless it hit floor tip first, it probably is fine, and even if it did land tip first chances are it'll still be fine. SM57 are famous for their take a hit and keep on ticking ability. If it bugs you, see if you can bring it to the store and A/B it against a new one. Pan the new one hard right, the yours hard left and listen with headphones, it should be very apparent if you damaged something or not.

Hell, I use mine as hammers. :D

This has happened to me - there is no way of mentally getting over it -- you'll always feel it would be better "if I hadn't..."

Where did you buy it? I would take it back. Just do it, man. Seriously. Who cares. Shure will probably turn around and sell it to someone without the mental baggage, and all will be right in the world.

Ha. That's a good point about the mental damage. Speaking from experience, once you suspect you might have damaged something something, it's hard to get over that hurdle even if you have no evidence to suggest anything is wrong with it.

Heh, tell that to the 57 I killed with a couple of whacks of my drumstick.

I know what you mean man, I dropped my GT66 a while back and although I'm 99% sure it sounds the same there's always that little doubt in the back of your mind driving you nuts. :D

same thing here with a guitar amp. me and a friend got a little wild one night and my amp took some abuse. that mental baggage thing is a bitch.

Haha, don't worry man. Sm57's are nearly indestructable. A similar thing happened to the drummer in my band. He just bought a new set of cymbals and right after setting up his 16" sabian crash the stand some how managed to tip over. The rim of the cymbal hit the soild steel bass of my mic stand (the only hard object in 6 feet). He wasn't too happy.

At least its only a 57.

Better check to see how bad a dent it made in the floor.

Chill a bit - they're pretty tough.

They are tough, but like Mad Audio, I've had one were the head got whacked and popped right off--like a daisy (Don't do any mic lore inspired hammering with that end.)

i've known someone who's used one to nail in a hammmer....seriously. loose nail in something, didn't have a hammer around...grabbed a 57. Did it have some dents?? probably, but it still worked.

does it sound good to you though? forget what it sounded like earlier, how does is sound now?? that's what really matters doesn't it? If I had a Radio Shack mic that I accidently dropped, and then all of a sudden it started sounding like a Neumann tube mic....you can bet your ass I wouldn't give a shit. "Sounds great now!! I'm buying 10 more of these puppies!"
lol
